Chuck’s Bed

9436280055_6ce55c7c3d_z

I thought I would show you all Hubby’s latest project.  He has been working on making a bed for Chuck.  It is almost finished.  The headboard and footboard used to be our dining table benches.  When we first made our dining table we made benches to go with it.  Years later I decided I was tired of the benches and wanted chairs.  So he made me chairs.  (He’s so good about things like that!)  Anyway the benches moved up to the building for a while and now they are being remade into a bed.  I like that.

We have been busy with our garden here.  Canning is in full swing.  I love it!!!  Lots of good food being saved for winter time.  Our cucumbers are just about gone.  I thought about planting some more seeds but I don’t think they would have time to do anything.  We have been blessed with lots of cucumbers this year so we have made several batches of pickles.  I put the recipe for the Christmas pickles over into my recipe file under canning if any of you are interested.  We had our first taste of fresh corn this past week.  YUM!  I love fresh garden corn.  When I was younger and it was time to put up the corn, my mom would always cook corn on the cob for breakfast.  She said it put us in the right frame of mind.

We had our annual Sunday School Breakfast this morning.   We usually have it at SmartView Park here on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  For some reason (that I will never understand) the Parkway has decided not to open many of the picnic areas this year.  So we couldn’t have our breakfast there.  The road is still washed out going down to the river so we had our breakfast at the Coon Hunters Club.  Yes, ladies, coon hunting IS a sport here.  We have never participated in it but many people do.  Anyway, we had tons of good food!!  It was a really nice way to start off the service.

Tomorrow, I will be helping Hubby texture a ceiling.  After that we have some tomatoes to can.  I think we will make spaghetti sauce with them. In the meantime, I have a new book from the library, a cup of tea and a green swing that is calling my name.   I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

A Ride Down The Parkway

I have always loved this church sitting upon the hill.  Saturday was a wood cutting day here.  Chuck and his family came over to help.  We brought down 2 huge trees.  We got them all cut and brought home.  We still have to split them though.  It was a really fun day. Chuck’s girlfriend had never been part of wood cutting. (She’s a town girl).  I think she had a good time though.  The kids had lots of fun.

Today the girls and I went to Roanoke to pick up a few things.  We went walking through the mall, which is something we don’t do very often.  I stepped into Macy’s-my first time.  You all remember that I have been looking for a hard anodized pot to use for cooking down my sauces.  One like Mrs. Sally let me borrow this summer.  Well, they had one on sale for 1/2 price!!  Yeah, me!!!  I was very happy.  I very seldom come across deals like that.  I certainly am glad I walked into that store.

Well, that’s about all that’s been happening here.  I hope you all have a great day and God bless.

Birthday and Cherries

Today we celebrated my Julie’s 14th birthday.  My, my, how time has flown by.  Seems like just the other day, my Lord was surprising me by giving her to me.  God is SO good.  We celebrated at Groundhog Mountain with hamburgers, hotdogs and chocolate cake.  The Horn’s came with us and Dave, Jess and the kids met us on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Meadows of Dan.  We had a wonderful day!!

Mrs. Vicki bringing trucks for the boys to play with.  You will notice she has on a jacket.  It was kinda chilly here this morning.  42 degrees when we got up.   I think it is supposed to be about that chilly tonight too.  It was a nice day though-definitely not too hot.

Daniel seems to be deep in thought.

From the picnic area, we went on down the Parkway to Levering Orchard to pick cherries.

The trees were loaded with cherries.

Can you tell Sam loves cherries!

If you look closely in this picture, you will see a man in the top of the tree picking.

We all had so much fun.  I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than with family and best friends.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Sunday Morning

100_6869

It seems I have so much to share with you all.  Our church has a fellowship breakfast once a year at Smartview Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Sunday was a beautiful morning for eating outside.  Saturday we were wondering if we would get to have it or not.  We had lots of fog but Sunday morning was bright and beautiful.   I took sausage gravy, biscuits, fresh churned butter, and scrambled eggs-fresh from our hens.  God is so good!

Jess and the boys came up Saturday morning to spend the weekend.  David was at a conference  in Georgia all day Saturday.  He came to our house after the conference.  He got here about 1:00 A.M.  Jessica’s friend Leah came over on Saturday to visit with her.  Our house had lots of action-five children all together chasing after kittens.  They all had lots of fun.  We made peach ice cream Saturday evening.  It was VERY good but I am partial to peach ice cream.   I got the recipe from Allrecipes.com

2 1/2 pounds fresh peaches – peeled, pitted and chopped

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 pint half-and-half cream
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole milk, or as needed
  • Mix all ingredients together and put into ice cream maker.

Yesterday I made homemade tomato soup from our tomatoes.  I got this recipe from allrecipes.com  also.

    4  cups chopped fresh tomatoes

  • 1 slice onion
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar, or to taste
  • Directions

    1. In a stockpot, over medium heat, combine the tomatoes, onion, cloves and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, and gently boil for about 20 minutes to blend all of the flavors. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a food mill into a large bowl, or pan. Discard any stuff left over in the food mill.
    2. In the now empty stockpot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until the roux is a medium brown. Gradually whisk in a bit of the tomato mixture, so that no lumps form, then stir in the rest. Season with sugar and salt, and adjust to taste.

I did do a few things different.  I used about 1/4 tsp celery salt instead of regular salt and I only used 1/2 tsp sugar.  I made enough of this to can 5 pts.  According to the Ball canning book, you process this for 20 min. on 10 lb pressure.  I ended up putting mine in the freezer as I was pushed for time.

Okay, one more recipe.  I told you all I had a lot to share.  That’s what happens when I don’t make a post for several days.  Anyway, today I made a peach simple syrup.  I had a few peaches left and wondered what I could do with them.  Something easy.  I cut the peaches into chunks. Enough to make l cup chopped peaches.  I then brought to a boil 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water.  Pour the boiling water over the peaches and let sit.  I let mine sit all day.    Strain the mixture and you have a great tasting peach simple syrup.  Then I put about 3 tbsp. peach simple syrup into an 8 oz glass.  I then added ice and sparkling water.  I would have used club soda but I was out of it.  I got this idea from http://theblessedhearth.blogspot.com/.  She did something similar with ginger.  I think I might even try mixing the peach and the ginger syrup together.  I might try adding this to tea as I really like peach tea.  Well, I’ve bored you all enough with all these recipes.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

    Fall Pictures

Here’s some pictures taken on the back side of our road.  It is a very beautiful drive.    We’ve been down to Dave and Jess’ for a few days working on the bathroom project.  Making progress.  Commode is set and walls are ready for paint.  Jess hopes to have it ready in time for Thanksgiving.  I think we’ll make it in time.  Temperatures here are nice today.  Upper 60’s.  The sun is shining.  A beautiful fall day.  Dad is home and has suggested a hike on one of the many trials here on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The girls are hurrying to finish school  and get ready for the hike.  It promises to be a really nice afternoon.  I hope everyone enjoys their afternoon as much as I am planning on enjoying mine.  God Bless.
