This is my new helper. I did not even know these existed. About 1 month ago, I was in our local farm supply store, and spotted one of these. All I have ever used are the old food mills. I have been told these are so much better than a food mill. I can’t wait to try it out. My friend Vicki and I will be making applesauce today out of early cooking apples. When we lived in Grundy, we had a June apple tree in our front yard. I sure do miss that tree. What they have up here has a little different taste than that one did, but they are still good. It is our favorite type of applesauce, so I hope to can a lot of it. Last year, apples were hard to find. We ran out of applesauce early in the winter and had to buy from the store. Not near as good as home canned. Guess I’ll get busy. Lots to do today but lots of fun too. Take care and God bless.
Apple Blossoms
Our apple tree is blooming. Isn’t it pretty! We are not sure what type of apples these are. The tree was here when we came. However they are very good apples. The tree blooms very early though and usually gets caught in the frost. I fear this will happen this year. Temperatures tonight will be in the upper 20’s. We have had a very hard wind for 2 days now so of course it feels much colder. Temperature now is about 50 with a wind chill of about 40. YUCK! I guess this is what we call “dogwood winter” as the dogwoods are blooming now. Warmer temps are on the way though. Yeah!
Dogwood in bloom outside our dining room window.
My bouquet of flowers for the ladies today. I love to have fresh flowers out when they come. Makes the room look so much more cheerful. We all enjoyed these today. Forsythia and spirea. Class went very well. Two ladies could not come. We missed you, Wanda and Vicki. I know I have said this many times, but this really is a good study. She takes it nice and slow so you get to just let it all sink in. I like that. I better get started on supper. Take care and God bless.
Projects
Here is Julie’s wall hanging. What do you all think? I think maybe for a beginner it might not be too bad. It really was a lot of fun. There was a little more guilting involved than I first anticipated but I think it turned out okay. I am going to start Grace’s hopefully this week. More snow today. We have had more snow this winter than we have had since we have lived here at the farm-6 yrs. now. I hope this makes for an excellent garden year. Hopefully lots of good veggies and fresh fruit. Fruit trees in our area did not do well last year and we really missed all those good apples, pears, and peaches.
Another project I worked on today. Making our own hamburger buns. This batch turned out much better than the first batch. At least these look like buns. We’ll find out this evening how they taste. I think hamburgers and fries for supper. School has been a little slow today, sometimes this happens when we take a day off. Of course, the snow outside didn’t help any. The forecast is calling for another storm to come in over the weekend. I guess this will mean no MawMaw time. Maybe the next weekend. Well break time is over. Time for school. Thanks to everyone for reading and commenting. God Bless.
Busy Days
I’m sorry I don’t have a picture to post today. Things have been very busy around here this week. We got to have some MawMaw and PawPaw time Tuesday and Wednesday. Those of you who are grandparents know that takes top priority over everything else. Daniel’s highlight of his stay was riding around the farm in PawPaw’s truck. Wednesday night was really nice. David, Jess, and Daniel went to the fellowship meal with us at church. Everyone (of course) was tremendously impressed with Daniel. Thursday morning brought water heater problems. We replaced both elements and thought our problem was fixed. We should have known better. Never does plumbing go that smooth. We left to have dinner with some friends of ours. We were blessed to pick some apples at their farm. We came home and discovered a hugh water leak under the sink. I mean really under the sink, between the dirt and the floor. The back part of our house sits directly on the ground so this presented a rather large problem. MY WONDERFUL HUBBY ( with my help) managed to get this fixed today. Also I have decided to attempt to sell my crafts at another festival. This one will be Oct. 3. This means I have 1 week to get more stuff made. Today after helping with the plumbing and putting poly on a cabinet we are making for ourselves, I finally got to do some sewing. I made a set of cloth napkins, 1 apron, and set up 1 lap quilt. Hopefully I will finish the quilt tomorrow. It is a Christmas quilt. I will try to post a picture of it when finished. Well it is late. I am tired. God Bless.
