Peaceful Scene

We did not get to have our breakfast picnic yesterday morning at the park.   Weather was too bad.  VERY foggy here.   Most people would not have been able to find the park .  Everything is wet, wet, wet.   We did move it to the church, however, so we still had breakfast.  Just not outside like originally planned.  Lots of good food though.  The pastors sermon was on the Lord’s Prayer.  It was a very good message.

I have been told this strange looking flower is called a Naked Lady.  The name suits it.  There are no leaves on it what so ever.  Just a tall stem and then the flower.  They have filled out more since I took this picture however I could not get a new picture.  It is too foggy and dreary today.  The girls and I will be busy making more salsa.  I did not like the recipe in the Ball canning book as much as I like my old recipe.  It was given to me by a Mennonite friend, Judy.  So today we are making her recipe.  Much better.  Temperatures have been cooler here.  Low’s in the upper 50’s, high’s in the low to mid 60’s.  Wet, foggy.  Nice days for doing work inside or just curling up with a good book.  I think I’ll try to work both of these activities in today.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Just a Swingin

Sam really loves his swing.  He does not however like his car seat.  He was sooooooo ready to be home Saturday after shopping.  He wanted his swing and some sleep.  Us girls got up early and went blueberry picking.  We picked 2 gallon-1 for us and 1 for Jess.  We came home just before the rain started.  Good timing.  It rained  most of the day there.

Afterward, we all went out to eat at Golden Corral.  Then we went to look around at Lifeway.  I purchased a new bible study.  It is Ruth by Kelly Minter.  I think this will be our next Friday Ladies Study.  It looks very interesting.   I saw so many new studies that I want to do.  We even picked out one for the girls to do for their bible class this coming year.  It was a great day.  We all had lots of fun.

We are getting some much needed rain today.  Temperatures are cooler too.  74 degrees right now.  I like that.   Did you all notice my drying log on the right.  My darling baby girl, Grace, did that for me.  She told me she watched David put the others on.  I was very impressed with her knowledge as I have no idea how to do any of that.  Thanks Grace.

Church was very nice yesterday.  Our pastor’s sermon was on what it takes to make a man.  It was a very good sermon.  Then we had communion, followed by a fellowship meal.  LOTS o f good food.  Then we had more good food last night with our Sunday Evening Study.  All in all it was a really good day.  I better get busy.  Take care and God bless.

VBS

Here are a few pictures of the decorations for bible school.  Our theme this year was Harvesting God’s Word.  We had lots of good lessons, fun crafts and games, and of course good food.   We averaged around 17 kids each night.   I wanted to get some pictures of the kids, but Hubby put it all on video and I don’t know how to load that on the blog.  Our pastor was there every night.  He has such a heart for kids.  I think he had as much fun as they did.

Progress is slow but moving on the new room.  A minor setback occurred when we decided to put the door in a different place.  This required undoing almost all we had done.  Hubby had to remove the floor and do all the plumbing drains different.  This will be much better though than the original plan.

The girls and I have been busy today putting up gooseberries in the freezer.  We had 6 bags.  This is the first time I have froze gooseberries.  I hope they will be good.  I also gathered some squash and zucchini to put in the freezer.   We will  be enjoying the first of our broccoli this evening with supper.  I think home grown broccoli is so much better than store bought but then I think everything is better home grown.   If I finish these other veggies in time, I think I will put up some rhubarb.  I have gotten a little behind with my harvesting due to bible school and the new room.  Oh well, all in God’s time.   It has been a very pleasant morning for me.   I so much enjoy putting up our own veggies that we raise in our garden.  It always gives me a feeling of peace and contentment.

We are planning to go to the fireworks this evening in town.  We had hoped the Horn’s would get to meet us there but Quentin had to work.  Jess and Dave are going to enjoy fireworks down at their town.  They will be coming up next weekend.  Sam’s first trip to the mountains.  I can hardly wait to see them all.  I guess I better get busy if I expect to get anything done.   Happy 4th of July.  Take care and God bless.

Flowers

This lily has had a rough beginning.  In early spring, it was trampled and broken by a big footed pup.  It seems to have survived nicely though.  I have waited all spring to see what it would look like.  I think it looks pretty next to the purple flowers.  I most definitely will have to separate some of these flowers next year.  The bed is extremely crowded.  Yesterday was a busy day.  The girls and I cleaned out both of the big freezers-making room for this year’s harvest.  This took a major portion of the day.  Then I helped Hubby by mowing some before he came in from work.  For supper, I used some of the pork tenderloin I had cooked the day before.  I like to cook a large amount of meat at one time and then use it in different dishes for another meal.  So I put the tenderloin in the oven with some potatoes and roasted them.  We also had corn on the cob from our freezer, biscuits with butter and homemade blackberry jam for dessert.  Today is starting out to be a beautiful day here is Floyd.  Lots of sunshine.  Tomorrow our church is doing a horseshoe tournament down by the river.   We will play horseshoes, eat lots of good food, listen to good music and in general have a great time.  It amazes me some people think Christian life is boring.  We have a blast at my church!  We are small in number but we do lots of things together.  We are family.  I will try to get some pictures to post of our activities.  This is the first year we have done this and we are hoping many will come.  Baby Sam and Mom are still doing good.  Daniel says he loves his baby brother. Thanks so much for your prayers.  I hope to go down to see them soon and get more pictures.  Take care and God bless.

Roses-Getting Ready

100_3572

My rose bush is full of these little buds.  I can’t wait to see them in bloom!  Of course, I will take a picture so you all can see them too.  Today we begin our new study today on I Corinthians.  Pray for us, as the ladies seem to think this will be a hard study.  To me, hard means digging deeper.  Hopefully, digging deeper means understanding deeper.  We’ll see.  Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Floyd.  Sunshine, not too warm, just right.  I washed clothes again and hung them out on the line to dry.  I thought I should take advantage of the sunshine.  They are calling for rain this evening through Monday.  Every year, our church does a youth Trout Fest day.  It is scheduled for tomorrow.  The pond is already stocked and ready to go.  It is a big day. The kids fish from 9:30 to 12:00.  Then we have a picnic lunch.  Hotdogs with all the fixin’s.  Lots of desserts.  The kids and the adults have a LOT of fun.  Hopefully, it will not get rained out.  We went over to a friend’s house last night.  I made homemade cinnamon rolls and took them to share.  Good coffee, good food, good fellowship.  Life is good and God is great!  I took Jessica’s advice and made the rolls a little different this time.  I put chopped pecans in the middle along with the brown sugar and cinnamon.  Then for the icing I made a quick caramel frosting from my Mennonite cookbook.  The recipe is:

1/2 cup butter and 1 cup brown sugar.  Melt together on low heat and boil 2 min. stirring constantly.  Add 1/4 cup milk and heat just until boiling again.  Remove from heat and cool slightly.  Stir in 2 cups sifted powdered sugar.

This was very good on the cinnamon rolls.  I know it would be excellent on cakes as well.  Time for my day to get busy.  Take care and God bless.

Having Fun

100_3091

Daniel is having fun on his new swing set.  I think it was the highlight of his weekend.  We had a great visit.  Lots of good food and sunshine.  The temperature was extremely nice which made for an easy time hiding and hunting for eggs.  Temperature here is nice too.  Mid 70’s.  I love it.   Flowers are popping up everywhere.  It is so exciting!   I pray everyone had a nice Easter.  Take care and God bless.

More Ice

The ice storm did come on Christmas morning.  Not as much as they predicted but enough to do damage.  So far, Praise God, we still have electricity.  As you can tell from one of the pictures, one limb is hanging over the power line.  George will have to work on this after the ice stops.   Christmas dinner did occur.  Lots of good food.  Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, baked beans, sweet potatoes and homemade rolls.  I wish all the family could have been together to enjoy it.  Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to eat another  big meal next weekend.  Life is tough sometimes.  Today has been spend playing board games, cards, and other fun activities.  I pray your Christmas has been as enjoyable as mine.  Maybe next post, I’ll put something summery and cheerful.  God Bless.

Critter Chompin

Tonight our church sponsors something called a Sportman’s Banquet, or as we call it The Critter Chompin.  Our church has a really great men’s ministry that reaches out to the hunters in our community.  Many women and youth from our church are hunters too.  So this is a great opportunity for them (and us) to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  They will bring lots of wild game especially deer as they are in abundance here.   We’ve taking turkey chili and it is simmering now in the pot.  It smells SO GOOD in here.  I can hardly wait to sample all the good food tonight.   We give away door prizes and have people give testimonies to what Christ has done in their life.  A very nice way to spend an evening.  Today has been a georgeous day in Floyd.   Sunshine, wind, warm temperatures.  Just wonderful.   I think I’ll go enjoy some outside time before we have to leave.  God Bless.
