Wineberries

Wineberries are starting to get ripe here in our area.  They grow wild however we are hoping to get a start of them this fall.

100_6573

I think they look a lot like red raspberries (maybe they are but folks here call them wineberries).  They have a tart taste.

Grace and I picking berries.

Julie picking.  We all wore our rubber boots in case we came across any unwanted critters.  Next time we will wear long pants as well.  We took some down to Sam when we went and he dearly loved them.  Daniel would not even try them.  As I have mentioned before, he is not a fruit eater.  Hubby is gone today with his brother down to Grundy.   His Mom has a couple of apple trees that need to be cut.  She was afraid they were going to fall on the power line.

I plan on working on a few aprons today and maybe going back to pick a few wineberries.  I did make the pickles the other day but I didn’t add the squash.  I had enough cucmbers to do one batch so I just made them using all cucumbers.  I got 8 pts though instead of 6 as the recipe said.  They seem very similar to bread and butter pickles.  I think they will be very good.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

New Machine

100_4983

Yesterday, I decided I just could not fix my machine.  We decided we should not be having all that trouble with a new machine so we took the machine back to Wal-Mart where we had purchased it.  As you all recall, I had not had the machine very long at all and it has always given me trouble.  Anyway, Wal-Mart took it back and we exchanged it for this machine.  As soon as I started sewing on it, it was obvious this is a better machine.  I have never used a Singer before but I definitely pray we will be getting better service from this one than from the Brother.  I finished the sewing project that I had previously started.

This is for my little man, Daniel, who loves, loves, loves to help his mom in the kitchen.  I hope it looks like a little boy apron.  I wanted something with tractors on it but blue jean material was all I had that looked boyish.  Weather permitted they will be coming up Sunday.  Chuck and his family may come also.  This would be a first-all my grandkids in the house at the same time.  WOW!  They are calling for some snow to hit here tomorrow and Sunday so we’ll just have to wait and see.

We will be having our candlelight service at church tonight.  This is such a beautiful service.  We have these little shelves on the walls and on top of the shelves we have oil lamps.  All the oil lamps are lit and the electric lights are turned off.  It is absolutely beautiful.  We have communion and the pastor has a message.  Then we all light our individual candles, gather around in a circle and sing Christmas hymms.  It is such a special time and we all look forward to it.  I pray you will all have a wonderfully blessed Christmas Eve as well.

Celebrate the birth of our Savior.  May He bless each of you with a special portion of His presence on this wonderful day-Christ’s birthday.   God bless.

Sunday

Yesterday was such a fun day for us.  We decided to take the girls to the movies as part of their Christmas gift.  As we very seldom go to the movies, this was a big treat.  We found (thanks to our friends, the Horns) a movie theater that is affordable and family friendly.  We watched The Chronicles of Narnia-Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  It was a very good movie and we all had a great time.  Grace has read the book and Julie is in process now of reading it.

Also, as my aprons are now being sold in a local store, I thought it would be nice to try out some different patterns.  I had been told it would be nice if I could do matching aprons.  One for Mom (or MawMaw)and one for a little girl.  I found a pattern I like pretty well.  Here is a picture of it.

Not exactly what I was looking for but a good place to start.

100_4969

This is the material I picked out.  The floral will be the main material and the striped will be the contrasting material.  What do you all think?   I am having difficulties with my sewing maching, so pray I can get it up and running soon.  (Could be the operator, who knows!)  Anyway, I am excited to start a new project and upping my abilities.  I have not made many things from a real pattern.  Usually, its something I just figure out on my own or I alter the pattern so that it fits my abilities.  Sally, our pastor’s wife, has agreed to help me if I get in over my head.  I don’t think I will though.  It looks pretty easy on paper.  I will show you the finished results when done.

I think I’ll go check out my machine.  Take care and God bless.

Our First Decoration

100_4878

This is our first decoration of the season.  I like to use decoration that will work for all winter, not just for Christmas.  This is due to laziness on my part.  I so enjoy putting them up but not so much taking them down.  This way I get to leave them up longer.   Both my girls are sick, so today has been a rather slow day for us.  We only did what we call “half school” which was bible, math and language.  Then we took a break, went up to the building and found our little village.   This village sets every year on this table.  When the girls were younger, it was continuously getting rearranged.  They would play with the houses and the people for hours.   My dad built this table for my mom when they first got married.  There is a shelf underneath and when I was a little girl, my golden book collection sat on the lower shelf.  Funny, the things we remember.   After decorating, we enjoyed a game of cards and now they are upstairs playing a board game.  I so enjoy days like today-just sorry my girls don’t feel well.

It is chilly here with rain moving in.  A good day for enjoying the fire and each other.  I pray your day has been as enjoyable as mine.  God bless.

Country Living

These are just a few pictures I took yesterday on our way into town.  This road runs alongside the Parkway for a while.  Then branches off into other roads.  It is one of the many roads we can take to get to town.  I thought you all might enjoy seeing it.

On the side of this road, fall flowers are already beginning to bloom.  Joe Pie and Goldenrod.

In about another month, corn cutting will begin.  This hill will have lots of activity.  These are just a few things I am blessed to enjoy every day.  Sometimes the beauty of this place I live overwhelms me.  I haven’t lived very many places in my life but I do know this place I live now is very beautiful.

The girls and I had fun yesterday.  We ran some errands, went to the Salvation Army and Goodwill, Wal-Mart of course.  I found Hubby a nice church outfit at the Salvation Army and a tie to match at Goodwill.  He normally doesn’t wear a tie but now that he is a deacon, they have to wear a tie on the day we do the Lord’s Supper.  We also found Grace a skirt and a top to match and both girls got a swim suit.  They did not have one and they hope to get to swim over the weekend at David’s mom’s pool.  We are going down this evening.  She has some more apples that are ripe and some pears.

Today is Ladie’s Bible Study.  We are still doing it at Barbara’s house, probably all this month.  However today is starting out nice and cool so we might could have done it here.  Oh well.  We’ll just stick to our original plan.  I have dessert this week and I am taking a peach pie I made.  The girls are going to play at the Horn’s while I am doing bible study.  They are very excited.  It will be a fun day for everyone.  Vicki and I will visit when I come to pick the girls up.  I’m planning on surprising her with a new type of tea for us to share.  I guess though if she reads this before I get there it won’t be a surprise.

Well, I gotta go.  There’s work to do.  We want to be ready to leave when Hubby comes in this evening.  Gotta go get me some MawMaw time.  Take care and God bless.

Growing Up

100_3532

Look how much the baby geese have grown.  100_3536

Learning how to follow in a line.

They have grown so much.  I guess I didn’t realize how fast they would grow.  They wonder all around in the fields and even sometimes in the yard.  Very cute.

100_3529

We also have other new babies.  The girls found these yesterday in one of our outbuildings.  I’m not sure who their momma is but they are very cute.

100_3543

Fog came in this morning.  If you look very closely you can see the geese on the pond.  Now you can’t even see the pond.  Very foggy.   Very dreary but good for the plants I put in the garden yesterday.  Yesterday was a very busy day.  When I was young, my mom would use the term “wash day”.  I understand this term better now.  On a wringer washer, doing lots of laundry  literally is a full day of work.  I filled up all my clotheslines twice. LOTS of laundry.   Included in this full day, I also put all the vegetable plants we had purchased in the garden.  Hopefully we are done with frost.   Last night was Team Kids at church.  Next Wednesday is party night as this will be the last week until fall.  Tomorrow we will finish up our Esther study by Beth Moore.  This has been a very good study.  I highly recommend it.  Our Ladies Friday Study will be doing I Corinthians by John MacArthur next.  After that, I want to do Beth Moore’s study on Revelation.   Is anyone familiar with it?  I have looked at it at Lifeway but I would like to get feedback from someone who has done it.  Our Corinthians study is 12 weeks so I have a while to decide.  Better get busy.  Take care and God bless.

I received this picture from Dave and could’nt wait to put it on my blog.  Ain’t he just the cutest thing?  Nothing says  boy more than a baseball cap and a truck.  Temperatures here have warmed up greatly.  Highs in the upper 40’s to low 50’s.  The girls have spent much time outside playing which of course Jasper (the pup) loves.  The forecast however is calling for freezing rain Thursday night and Friday morning.  Oh well, it is just the middle of January.  Grace did find a dandelion in bloom yesterday, just to remind us spring is coming.  Not much longer until we see some flowers in bloom.  We  normally have some early wildflowers that bloom here about the end of  March- blood root, colts foot, and periwinkle.   We get so excited when we see them.  Only about 6 more weeks to go.  In the mountains where I was raised, my Mom always planted lettuce, peas and onions on Valentines day.  Can’t do that here.  We have had frost as late as the end of May.  I guess I better quit dream about spring and garden food and get to work.  God Bless.

This is our kitty.  You know, the one Mom said would never be in the house.  Rule #1 Never say Never.   The girls begged for an inside cat and finally we gave in.  So now this furball is part of our life.  She does occasionally have her good moments.   However the girls love her dearly so I guess she stays.  Thanks Grace for the picture.   Today has been cool and overcast.  Fog is, thankfully, gone.  Hubby had a great time shooting yesterday.  He hopes to go again soon.  We have been without a pastor for several months.  Today we heard a trial sermon from a prospective pastor, with a fellowship meal following the sermon.  (Gotta have our food).   He will preach again next Sunday.  Then the church will vote.  I’m not sure my feelings on this yet.  I’m still praying.  Tonight we will hear Mike Wingfield preach at a neighboring church.  I’m sure it will be interesting.  Gotta Go.  God Bless.

Toy Chest

000_0025

Remember last week I said we were working on a wood project.  Well here it is.  I couldn’t post about it then because we wanted it to be a surprise.  Daniels birthday is coming up so we made him a much needed toy chest.  The train on the front was my first time painting a design on a project.  It was fun, however I was concerned I would mess it up.  It turned out okay though.  Daniel seemed to like it and Mom really liked it.  Now she has a place for some of his toys.  He loves trains and tractors.  I looked for a stencil but couldn’t find one so we just made our own.  George got the picture from the internet.  I cut it out and traced it on the wood, then painted it in.  I told him he should make some more perhaps to sell.   We’ll see.  Gotta go gather beets.  God Bless.
