An Unplanned Visit

100_4146

Yesterday was a fun day.  At the spur of the moment, we decided to travel down to Grundy and visit Hubby’s parents.  We took food for lunch.  We took canned beef, green beans, corn, and peaches.  We also dug some potatoes, gathered some tomatoes, cabbage and grapes.  This was a special treat for them as they are no longer able to raise a garden.  While we were there, she gave me some more empy canning jars.  This way hopefully we won’t have to buy any to finish up the canning.

She does have, though, growing on her hill a huge cushaw vine.  This is one of the hidden treasures it contains.  I really like cushaw, probably more than pumpkin.  I think it makes a better pie than pumpkin.  We really had a good visit.  We  took the scenic route home.  I’ll post some of those pictures hopefully tomorrow.

Today will be spent catching up and enjoying the day.  We will be starting school next Monday, so this is kinda our vacation week.  Take care and God bless.

Our Church

100_4138

This is a picture of our church.  It is a very small church that is out in the country.  My kind of church.  Today the pastor’s message was about what makes up a church.  It was a very good message.

This is the view from the backside.  Isn’t that grapevine pretty?  You can’t really see it but there is a nice garden behind the grape vine and over to the right is a nice small orchard with apples, pears, and plums.  A very nice setting.

We came home from church and for lunch we had homemade bbq using the  rolls Grace and I made yesterday for the buns.  We also had fresh corn from the garden and I made a macaroni salad.  For dessert we had the applesauce muffins we made yesterday.  Tonight’s menu at church will be pigs in a blanket, chicken casserole, green beans, potatoes, with pie and a cake for dessert.  Tonight will be our last lesson on I Corinthians.  We will start II Corinthians on Sept. 19.

Today has been another nice day here in Floyd.  Temperature right now is 82 degrees with a slight breeze.  Very enjoyable.  Time for me to go enjoy some of that nice weather.  God bless.

A Resting Kind of Day

100_4133

Today has been a kinda slow day.  Julie went shooting at the shooting range with her Dad today. She had a really great time and says she wants to go again.  Grace and I stayed home.  We made applesauce muffins.  I got the recipe from one of my blogger friends.  Remember the “peach sauce” we made earlier in the summer, well, we used it instead of applesauce.  They turned out really good.  Then we made some homemade rolls to go with supper tonight.  We will be having beef roast, corn from the garden and potatoes, with the homemade rolls of course.  I think watermelon for dessert.

Today is a beautiful day here in Floyd.  Temperatures in the upper 70’s, low 80’s.  One of those nice relaxing days.  I thought the picture of the cat summed up how the day has been.  Slow and lazy.  Yesterday was bible study day.  We only have one more lessons in I Corinthians and then we will start the Ruth study.  I am really looking forward to it.  I’m sure there will be lots to learn.

Time for me to go enjoy some of that nice weather.  My green swing is calling me.  Of course, the other cat will have to move over.

God bless.

Comparison

I thought it would be nice to look back and remember how things were just a few short months ago.  This picture was taken this morning.  Then I looked back and found another picture of the same scene.

Personally I like this morning’s picture better but to each his own.  Yesterday was busy for us.  The girls and I went to pick apples.  A friend from church offered us his early apples from his tree.  We were very thankful to get them.  After we came home, we started processing them.  Yesterday we got 11 quarts of applesauce made and still have more to work with today.  Sally, our pastors wife, told us she puts her apples in the microwave to cook them.  This was much easier as we didn’t have to worry about them burning.  Then she puts hers through her food strainer and puts them in the freezer.  I had never put applesauce in the freezer, only apples.  We tried that yesterday.  It was a lot faster and didn’t heat up the house.

Beautiful weather here in Floyd this week.  Much cooler temperatures with a wonderful breeze.    We have had several little rains which we really needed.  I picked green beans Monday and dug some young potatoes.  They were delicious.  I think I’ll be able to pick some more beans by tomorrow.  YUM!   I love fresh produce.

Did you all notice my canning and freezing logs Dave put on my blog?  Thanks Dave.  I really like being able to look at it and see what I’ve got done and what I still need.  I better get working on those apples.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Yummy!

If I were making a list of things that make me happy, this would definitely be one of them.  I feel so blessed when I go out in my garden and gather delicious food for my family to enjoy.  I know it sounds kinda way out there but it is true.  This evening’s supper will incorporate all these healthy veggies.  I’m just not sure how yet.  Maybe grilled chicken, grilled squash-I’m not sure but I know it will be good.  Today has been busy.  I’ve been trying to get some of the outside work done before it gets too hot.  After seeing the big snake yesterday evening, Hubby immediately started weed-eating.  I started mowing the yard.  We got about half finished before it got to late.  I finished mowing the yard early this morning.  I have been washing clothes and getting them on the line to dry.  They are probably already dry.  It is hot here but we have a really great breeze so it’s not so bad (especially in the shade).  I am going to work some more in the garden after lunch.  I need to tie the tomatoes, get rid of some nasty potatoes bugs.  It also needs to be weeded but I think I’ll save that for this evening.  The girls have been busy inside doing housework.  The ladies come tomorrow for bible study.

This is a picture of what we call the canning building.  The bottom is our cellar and on top we store all our empty cans, our canners and all our canning supplies.  When the girls were little, they started calling it the canning building and the name has just stuck.

Well, I think it’s time to get some lunch going.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Garden

100_3761

It’s been a while since I posted pictures of our garden.  It has really grown.  Everything looks to be doing really well.  You can’t tell it from the picture but the potatoes are beginning to bloom.

100_3762

This is our beans and corn.  We kinda got a late start on planting them but they look strong and healthy.   Today is an absolutely beautiful day here in Floyd.  Temperatures are in the lower 70’s with a nice breeze.  It’s one of those days where it is hard to work inside.  I would much rather be outside enjoying the day.  Hopefully, later after our inside work is done.  I plan on spending some quality time with my green swing.

100_3770

This is the kind of space I always dreamed of having.  It is one of the most peaceful places I know.  I so much enjoy coming and sitting down in this swing.  The Lord and I have had some of our best conversation here.   I am so thankful to my hubby for making this swing for me and for helping me keep this area beautiful.

100_3758

I wanted to show you all how the sun was glistening off the rows of corn.  The corn stalks seem to be glowing.  I thought it was very pretty.  I guess I’d better get busy if I want to get my housework done today.  After all, the green swing IS calling my name.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Flowers

100_3721

This lily has had a rough beginning.  In early spring, it was trampled and broken by a big footed pup.  It seems to have survived nicely though.  I have waited all spring to see what it would look like.  I think it looks pretty next to the purple flowers.  I most definitely will have to separate some of these flowers next year.  The bed is extremely crowded.  Yesterday was a busy day.  The girls and I cleaned out both of the big freezers-making room for this year’s harvest.  This took a major portion of the day.  Then I helped Hubby by mowing some before he came in from work.  For supper, I used some of the pork tenderloin I had cooked the day before.  I like to cook a large amount of meat at one time and then use it in different dishes for another meal.  So I put the tenderloin in the oven with some potatoes and roasted them.  We also had corn on the cob from our freezer, biscuits with butter and homemade blackberry jam for dessert.  Today is starting out to be a beautiful day here is Floyd.  Lots of sunshine.  Tomorrow our church is doing a horseshoe tournament down by the river.   We will play horseshoes, eat lots of good food, listen to good music and in general have a great time.  It amazes me some people think Christian life is boring.  We have a blast at my church!  We are small in number but we do lots of things together.  We are family.  I will try to get some pictures to post of our activities.  This is the first year we have done this and we are hoping many will come.  Baby Sam and Mom are still doing good.  Daniel says he loves his baby brother. Thanks so much for your prayers.  I hope to go down to see them soon and get more pictures.  Take care and God bless.

Butterfly

100_3471

I took these pictures the other day when we were cutting wood.   This butterfly is especially for Jess.

100_3464

This is the view from where we were cutting the wood.

100_3475

A picture of a fire pink.  There were lots of these blooming in the wooded area.

100_3467

There is a little trial you can walk that circles around.  This is the beginning of the wooded part of the trial.

100_3474

About 1 second after I took this picture, a squirrel came running down this trial straight toward me.  I was not fast enough with the camera to get a picture.  I am experiencing technical difficulties with my computer.  My technical support team (Dave) says it is my hard drive.  For now, I am using Hubby’s computer.  For all the people whose blog I read and comment on,  there may be a season of silence.  I have them on my computer in my favorites list and I do not know how to transfer them.  Dave will fix all this in due time.  I hope to learn how to post pictures on this computer.  Pray for me as you all know I am not very technical.  This is my fourth attempt to post this.  The pictures were already loaded from my old computer yesterday before it said goodbye.  Well, enough of all that.  Tonight’s menu at church will be hot dogs with homemade chili, slaw, chips, salad and some kind of dessert (unknown as of yet).  Lunch today was beef roast in the crock pot, potatoes cooked in butter, home canned green beans, and watermelon for dessert.  I guess I better get started on my study for tonight.  Take care and God bless.

Friday Ladies Bible Study Group

100_3262

This is our Friday Ladies Group.  Okay so two are looking down but it is the best we could do.  The sun was shining directly in our eyes.  The study as I have said before is really good.  We have 3 more lessons to go.  Then we are going to do I Corinthians using John MacArthur’s study book.  Today has been busy.  I made a loaf of bread, then made a batch of laundry detergent.  We are doing school and in my spare time I have hung out 4 extra large loads of laundry on the line.  Rain is supposed to come tomorrow so I wanted to get as much dried outside as I could.  We had frost this morning with temperatures about 28.  The house is just now started to warm up.  I didn’t want to build a fire because then the clothes I put on the line smell like wood smoke.  Not a bad smell-just not that fresh spring smell I wanted.  Tonights supper menu will be baked chicken, broccoli and cheese, and mashed potatoes.  And of course the  bread I made today.  Dessert will be rhubard dumplings.  Sounds pretty good.  I guess I better get started on all this food.  Hubby has just come in and seems to be VERY hungry.  Take care and God bless.

Another Sign of Spring

100_3021

Another indicator of spring.  This flower is one of the early ones.  I’m not sure what it is but it comes up early every year.  Does anyone know it’s name?  Anyway it is always such an uplifting sight to see it coming out of the ground.  Today has been a little cool here, overcast, kinda dreary.  Yesterday was georgeous.  Windy but lots of sunshine.  Today has been school as usual.  We are all looking forward to finishing the year (hopefully) a little early.  Our expectations are to be finished around the first of May.  I guess that is if we don’t miss too many days between now and then.  Spring is the hardest for us.  We want to take too many days off and enjoy the sun.  I’ve still been working on Grace’s quilt.  I’m about 2/3 of the way finished.  I really want to get it done soon so I can put the quilting frame away for summer.  It always seems to me, spring is the time for new projects and it is hard to get old ones finished when so many new ones are calling.  I MUST REMAIN FOCUSED!  Tonight’s menu for supper is venison strips, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy and homemade biscuits.  Dessert will probably be honey and butter swirled together and put on hot biscuits.  YUM!  Tomorrow is  Ladies Bible Study day.  It is going really well.  A very good study.  I highly recommend it.  Well it is time for us to get some house cleaning done and then start on supper.  Take care and God Bless.
