Homemade Liquid Hand or Body Soap

I got this recipe from:

http://www.thefarmersnest.com/2011/11/liquid-hand-soap-diy.html

Cheese grater (from the dollar store)
2 Tablespoons of Liquid Glycerin (found in the band aid section at any drugstore or grocery store)
1 – 8 oz bar of soap
1 gallon of water

Grate the entire bar of soap. Fill a pot with 1 gallon of distilled water and add the soap shavings.

Add 2 Tablespoons of liquid glycerin and turn the heat to medium/high and stir until the soap dissolves.
Leave it alone to cool for at least 10-12 hours. It begins to cloud up after 3-4 hours.
After it has cooled completely around 12 hours later it will harden and look like liquid soap.
If the soap is harder than it should be you can take some beaters and blend it while adding just a little bit of water until the consistency is more like liquid soap.

Homemade Yogurt

I got this original recipe from  http://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2009/08/easy-homemade-berry-yogurt.html#respond.  I have altered it some to suit our tastes.

Homemade Flavored Yogurt ( leave the jelly out if you want plain yogurt)

  • 4  3/4 cups milk at room temperature ( do not use fat free milk, it does not work well)
  • 8 ounces of high quality plain yogurt (yes this is more than most recipes, but it works)
  • 10 tablespoons of powdered milk
  • For flavored yogurt use:
  • 1/4 cup of jelly or jam or 1/2 cup pureed sweetened fruit (I have frozen fruit already sweetened that we picked this summer)

Milk must be at room temperature!  I measure it out and place it in a bowl that is covered for a few hours or heat milk to 180 degrees then cool to between 100 and 110 degrees.   Once the milk is at room temperature mix together the remaining ingredients(these need to be room temperature as well) , including the jelly or pureed fruit  . I find this mixes together best in a blender.  I let mine sit for a while after blending as I did not want frothy yogurt.    But if you are just making plain yogurt you can mix together with a whisk.  I then fill my yogurt cups and heat for 12 hours. Yogurt makers are different.  Adjust time according to your maker.   Remove jars from yogurt maker, refrigerate, and enjoy.

Add: 1 pt tomatoes or 1 qt home canned tomato juice, 1 small can tomato sauce or 1 small can tomato paste, 1 pkg chili seasoning mix (I prefer Chili-O brand), 1 tsp. chili powder, 1 tsp cumin, 3 cans kidney beans. Chili Seasoning Mix

3 tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp ground cumin, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 onion powder, 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper( I use much less of the 2 hot ingredients), 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together and pour into uncooked pie shell.  Bake at 350 degrees for about l hr.  Tastes very similar to pecan pie.

Homemade Deodorant

Vicki and I made this homemade deodorant.  I LOVE it.  I’m not sure where the recipe came from though.

Powder deodorant:  1/2 cup  baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch, about 10-15 drops essential oil (we used lavender)

Add 1/2 cup softened coconut oil to make solid deodorant.   I prefer the powdered one.

Soft Molasses Cookies

1 cup butter softened, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup molasses, 2 eggs lightly beaten, 1/2 tsp. salt, 2 1/4 tsp. baking soda, 2 1/4 tsp ground ginger, 1 1/2 tsp. cloves, 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 4 cups all purpose flour (I use whole wheat-fresh ground prairie gold) Mix all ingredients together.  Roll dough into balls.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 min.  Sprinkle tops of cookies with sugar while still warm.
