Jelly Update

Okay ladies, yesterday we made blackberry jelly.  I used the stainless steel kettle and the pomona pectin.  It turned out perfect!!! We were very happy.  Maybe it was the kettle all along.  Wouldn’t that be something?  I never thought the type of kettle used could make a difference but I do know yesterday’s jelly turned out perfect.  I will definitely be using this kettle every time.  I was very impressed with the pomona pectin.  If you haven’t ever tried it, I suggest you give it a try.  You use about 1/2 the sugar that you would use with sure jell or certo, which saves money.  I will be using it from now on.

First thing this morning, we had some errands to run in little town.  We paid a few bills and then went to the library for a while.  When we came back we starting making bread and butter pickles. These are Hubby’s favorite.  We ended up with 10 pts which is probably all we’ll need.  We do not eat a lot of pickles.  I am thinking if the cucumbers keep producing, we will try making sweet pickle relish.  I do make a lot of egg salad  and I thought it would be nice to have homemade relish to put in it.  Have any of you ever made it?

Supper tonight is chicken, potatoes and squash all fixed on the grill.  I love cooking on the grill.  Less clean up and less heat in the house.  Hubby is mowing while supper is getting ready and the girls are taking a short break upstairs.  Well, time to check on the grill.  I hope you all have a wonderful evening and God bless.

Raspberries

Our raspberries are getting ripe!  YUMMY!!!!  Black raspberries are one of my favorite fruits.  We have a few vines we have been working on getting established and it looks like this year we might get enough to make a cobbler at least.  (if we can keep the birds out of them)

Yesterday was a nice day.  We came back from church and cooked steak on the grill in honor of Dad’s day.  Steak on the grill is Hubby’s favorite meal.  We had fries with it, rolls and ice cream for dessert.  Our pastor’s sermon was very good.  It was of course directed mostly to the men in the church.  He preached on Ezekiel 22:30.  The verse says “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land.  I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land but I found none.”  He challenged our men to be the one that could stand in the gap.  It was a very powerful message.

Temperature here this morning is wonderful.  Low 60’s with a pretty strong wind.  Great for drying clothes.  I have one load ready to hang out and several more to go.  The girls and I have many errands to run today plus piano lessons.  I guess I better get busy.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Pandapas Pond

100_5407

Yesterday we decided to take the day off from school.   Hubby had to run a few errands in Blacksburg.  This little pond is close to B-burg so we thought it would be a nice to have a picnic and hike around the pond.  We had a really fun day.

This is one of the side trails you can walk on.  We stayed on the main trail that goes around the pond.

We saw lots of ducks and geese.  Also turtles.  I will show the turtle pictures and some more of the scenery tomorrow.   Temperature is so nice here this morning.  The birds are singing beautifully.  I have bread rising and a pork tenderloin roast ready to put in the oven for supper.  I think it is going to be a good day.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

A Cozy Bookcase

100_5103

This is part of the book shelf that sits in our  dining room.  Hubby  transformed it from an old quilt rack into a darling bookcase several years ago.  I am so blessed to have a husband who is talented in the art of carpentry.  We are back from Jessica’s.  We  got some of the painting done.  We still have to finish painting the trim.  We had a great visit.  The only sad thing is that baby Sam got sick with strep throat while we were there.  This is his first real sickness.

We haven’t done very much today.  We ran a few errands and visited some with the Horn’s.  It had been a long time since we visited with them.  We just wished it could have been a little longer visit.  We got a little snow over night but it is almost all gone now.  Temperature, though, was very cold this morning about 15 degrees with wind chills down around zero.  I think I would like some warm weather now.

I am going to watch a movie I ordered from netflix.  It is called Sarah’s Choice.  I think it will be very good.  I saw the preview of it on the inspiration channel.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

A New Day

100_4965

We were blessed with a beautiful sunrise this morning.  Thank you, Lord!  I just love sunrises and sunsets.  They make me feel so special.

We ended up getting some sleet and ice on top of the snow the other day.  Hopefully, it will start to melt today.   I have some errands I want to get done tomorrow.   We have warmed up nicely-30 degrees.  So much better than the other day.  Hubby and I walked down to the barn yesterday to get our milk.  Old Red (our truck) wouldn’t start and we thought the road was way to slick for the van.  It was a nice walk though.  I really enjoyed it.  I so much prefer walking outside to exercising inside.

I think I’ll get upstairs and do some sewing.  I have a few projects I want to get done before Christmas.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Country Living

These are just a few pictures I took yesterday on our way into town.  This road runs alongside the Parkway for a while.  Then branches off into other roads.  It is one of the many roads we can take to get to town.  I thought you all might enjoy seeing it.

On the side of this road, fall flowers are already beginning to bloom.  Joe Pie and Goldenrod.

In about another month, corn cutting will begin.  This hill will have lots of activity.  These are just a few things I am blessed to enjoy every day.  Sometimes the beauty of this place I live overwhelms me.  I haven’t lived very many places in my life but I do know this place I live now is very beautiful.

The girls and I had fun yesterday.  We ran some errands, went to the Salvation Army and Goodwill, Wal-Mart of course.  I found Hubby a nice church outfit at the Salvation Army and a tie to match at Goodwill.  He normally doesn’t wear a tie but now that he is a deacon, they have to wear a tie on the day we do the Lord’s Supper.  We also found Grace a skirt and a top to match and both girls got a swim suit.  They did not have one and they hope to get to swim over the weekend at David’s mom’s pool.  We are going down this evening.  She has some more apples that are ripe and some pears.

Today is Ladie’s Bible Study.  We are still doing it at Barbara’s house, probably all this month.  However today is starting out nice and cool so we might could have done it here.  Oh well.  We’ll just stick to our original plan.  I have dessert this week and I am taking a peach pie I made.  The girls are going to play at the Horn’s while I am doing bible study.  They are very excited.  It will be a fun day for everyone.  Vicki and I will visit when I come to pick the girls up.  I’m planning on surprising her with a new type of tea for us to share.  I guess though if she reads this before I get there it won’t be a surprise.

Well, I gotta go.  There’s work to do.  We want to be ready to leave when Hubby comes in this evening.  Gotta go get me some MawMaw time.  Take care and God bless.

Hidden Beauty

100_4062

Look at these beautiful little violas!  They were hidden away beside some other larger flowers.  I think they are so cute.  They reminded me about how sometimes the beautiful things of God are hidden.  He wants us to put forth a little effort to find them.  Reading and studying His word, praying.  These are all things He wants us to do in order to see His beauty.  But I think also He wants us to listen.  This seems to be the hardest part for me.  Satan obviously knows this because he continuously puts things in my path to distract me and, of course, I allow it to work.  I want to do better.  Spend more time with Him.

100_4060

What better place to spend more time with Him than right here.  My front yard-looking down at the field.  The cows are up for their morning snack.  The sun is shining and for today (just today) we are almost caught up with the canning.  The girls and I are going to have a “girl day”.  We have some errands to run and then maybe do some fun stuff in town.  We are thinking about going to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, maybe both.  We might even go to Books-A-Million.  I’m not sure yet what we will do, other than have fun.

One more flower picture.  I thought you all might be getting tired of seeing pictures of canning jars.  A little color was needed.  We’re off to enjoy our day.  God bless.

Orchard

100_3986

Friday evening we went to our Pastor’s house.  As I mentioned earlier, he gave us some peaches.  He has a small orchard at his house.  All his trees were so full of fruit.  It was beautiful.

100_3988

These are only a few of the trees.  Grace took lots of pictures.  I will try to post more of them tomorrow.

100_4004

This is a view from his yard.  Very pretty.  We also ate supper at his house.  Almost everything we had was home grown.  I love to eat this way.  We had hamburgers on the grill, cucumbers, onions and tomatoes from the garden, fresh homemade applesauce, and fresh peaches.  Delicious!

The girls and I did not get to can our beets yesterday.  As it was raining most of the day, we decided to run a few errands in town instead.  Jess had given me some coupons she had for canning jars and lids.  We decided to go to Wal-Mart and get these.  They are a little cheaper there than there are at our local supermarket.  We will be canning the beets today.

The sun is shining here nicely today.  Temperatures have cooled down some, thanks to the rain yesterday.  Outside temperature is about 80 degrees.  This is one of those weeks when things begin to start building up.  Much to do.  Beans are ready to pick, berries are ready, beets are ready and I think we might have enough tomatoes ripe to make a batch of salsa.  I love to can and put away food for my family however when I start getting behind, it is easy for me to allow that to become a stressor in my life.  I do not want this to happen.  God has given us this bounty and I thank Him for it.  When I was growing up,  the garden and canning controlled our summers.  I do not want that for my girls.  I want the garden and all it involves to be enjoyable and fun for my girls.  I want to keep a balance.  This is hard, as old habits are sometimes difficult to break.  Pray that I will do this well-that my girls will have a love for gardening and canning and not see it as just hard work.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

A Good Job

100_3790

We were extremely impressed with the food strainer.  It was super fast compared to the old food mill and had very little waste.  We processed a bushel of apples in about 4 1/2 hours.  We used both big canners.  We got 12 qts and 24 pints.  YUM!  I have always used the hot water bath canner to process applesauce.  However, I read in my Mennonite cookbook, they could be processed in the pressure canner.  We tried that yesterday and it went very fast.  15 min. on 5 lb. pressure.  Much faster than using a bath canner.  Vicki and I had a great time and of course the kids had fun.  It is so much more pleasant sharing canning with a friend.  I am so thankful the Lord placed our families together.  Good friends are sometimes hard to find and I consider Vicki one of the best.

The girls and I are planning a “girl day” out today.  We are going into C-burg to run some errands.  This will include Wal-Mart and Goodwill.  Temperatures have been very warm here in Floyd.  On the farm though, it isn’t near as bad as it is in town.  We are usually a few degrees cooler.  In the summer this is a plus, in the winter not so good.  Thankfully, we have quite a few shade trees in the yard and that really helps.

Time for us to get ready to leave.  Enjoy your day and God bless.
