Hello everyone!  I hope you all are doing well.  Seems like the week  rushes by here and I haven’t made a post.  School is going along.  Maybe even finishing a little early.  I have been watching ebay like a crazy woman getting all our books for next year.  Our science book is on the way and that finishes up all we need.  YEAH!

Our weather cooled off a bit over the weekend-redbud winter.  When the redbuds are in full bloom it always cools off some.  We have been having a fire but today has nice.  Hubby has been working on putting the vinyl siding on the new room.  I helped him some after school.  There always seems to be so much to get done in the spring.

Friday, Dave and Jess took us all out to eat to celebrate mine and Dave’s birthday.  We had planned on doing a cookout at their house but the weather was too bad.  We ate at a really cool restuarant.  I think the name was Hillbilly Hideaway (I could be wrong on the name but it was something like that).  They serve you family style.  BIG bowls and platters of food.  3 types of meat and tons of veggies.  It was really good.  Thanks, Dave and Jess. Of course, Jess couldn’t resist telling the waitresses it was our birthday celebration so they sang happy birthday to us.  It was a lot of fun.  One of the waitresses and I were talking.  She has several grandkids.  She said “I like to watch them one at a time.  I can’t handle them all at once, they wear me out, drive me crazy”.  Sam looked at me with big eyes and said, “MawMaw, are you crazy?”  I hugged him and said, “Yes, Sam, I think I am!”  I know I’m crazy for all them.  My children and my grandchildren are so important to me.  I can understand though what she was saying.  They sure do have lots more energy than I do.

Well, I guess that’s about all that’s going on here.  I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

Saturday

Hello ladies, I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.  We worked today on putting a fence around the gardens.

The “ladies” were very glad.  They had not been free all week as we had not had time to get the fences up.  We knew the minute they were turned loose they would head straight to the gardens.  To express their dislike of not being turned loose they cut back on their laying.  We usually get 11 or 12 eggs every day.  This week we got 7 or 8.  I told them I expected full quota next week.  No excuses.

We found this drift netting at the barn, rolled it out and cut it in two pieces.  The posts are cut from old wood we got from the job site.  Not bad-zero expense.  I am hoping the plastic bags that you see will keep the birds away.  So far it seems to be working.  I replaced the 14 plants they had eaten and so far all is well.  It took us 4 hrs to put this fence up.  Hubby helped or it would have taken much longer.

The rose bush at the green swing is in full bloom.  I think it is lovely this year.

Another picture of the rose bush.

I realized it had been a very long time since I put a picture of Jasper on here.

He is our farm dog in training.  Shadow has been teaching him all the tricks.  (Most times, Shadow just tolerates him).  Well, that’s about it for today.  Supper was hotdogs and beans.  Simple because Mom was tired.  I hope you all have a great Memorial Day Weekend and God bless.

Irises

100_9555

Our irises are in full bloom!  These were given to us several years ago by a friend from church.  It has taken them a while to get going but I think they are looking pretty good this year.

We have been busy this week.  Does any one think this is becoming the norm?  Seems like spring is a busy time.  Anyway, we went to the dentist on Tuesday.  Both girls got a good report.  Then on Wednesday, we went to Sam’s club and bought our bulk items.  Yesterday, we went down to Jessica’s.  Today is full as well.  Our church is doing a Mother/Daughter banquet this evening.  I am bringing rolls.  I also have to take Hubby’s van in to Little Town to get 2 tires put on.  I was hoping the girls and I could get the nests made today for the little chicks.  Hubby also wants to work on the floor for the new boxed in part of the back porch when he gets in from the job site.  We’ll see.

School has taken a back burner this week with all that has been going on.  We only lack 15 more lessons in math and we’ll be finished with it for the summer.  We are calling quits to language when math is finished.   Then we plan on doing history and science during June and July and taking August and September off.  These two months are so busy here with canning.  It is much easier for us to take those months off.

I also hope to make strawberry jam today.  Yesterday, while down at Jessica’s we got 2 gal. of strawberries.  I put one gallon in the freezer yesterday evening and hope to make jam with the other gallon today.  I think Jessica is planning on making jam tomorrow.  I am going to try using the liquid certo this time.  I just haven’t been having success with the powdered sure jell.

Well, that’s about it for now.  I better get busy if I am going to get anything done.  I hope you all have a great day and God bless.

Grapevine

100_9413

Our grapevine is coming along nicely.    Remember last year we cut it back too much and didn’t get not one single grape from it.  We are hoping for lots and lots of grapes this year.

We have been busy this week with school and other miscellaneous things.  Nothing too big.  We went to help Hubby yesterday.  The room he is working on needs lots of work on the floor.  It is sagging very badly.  He has to take the floor up and get under the house to jack it up.   It had little linoleum squares on it that had been put on with some kind of heavy duty glue.  We had to take the heat gun to each individual square and then use a shovel to get them up.  It took most of the day.

We are having a little cold spell here.  We call it dogwood winter as the dogwoods are in full bloom.  We have been in the upper 20’s at night with frost.  Yesterday’s high was low 40’s with lots of wind.  Chilly but today has been nice.  Sun and temperatures in the low 60’s.  I like that much better.

Well, that’s about all that is happening here.  I hope you all have a wonderful evening and God bless.

Apple Tree

100_9283

Our apple tree is in full bloom.  It certainly looks like we will have lots of apples on it-if the warmer weather holds out with no frost.  Our temperature was 36 degrees this morning.  It has already warmed up to lower 50’s.  As I type, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, clothes are drying on the line.  I truly have a blessed life.  Thank you, Lord!

We will be starting school in a little bit.  After school, I need to go into our little town and get a few things.  Then hopefully get home and get a few things done here.  I want to get our seeds started this week.  Tomorrow, Julie has an eye appointment in C-burg.  This usually is an all day thing.  We want to visit Goodwill while we’re over there.  The girls are hoping to find a few books.  Our Goodwill has an actual used book store in a separate building.  It will be a fun girls day out.

Our back road is full of wild spring flowers.  We see something new blooming every time we travel that way.  Yesterday, the columbine was blooming.  I so enjoy seeing all the spring flowers come to life.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Spirea Bush

100_9231

I wanted to share with you all this picture of our spirea bush.  I think it is the fullest this year it has been in many years.  So bright and cheerful.  Not much happening around here.  We went with Hubby to work yesterday.  Today we went down to Jessica’s but we forgot to take the camera.  I want to remember it next time.  You all will not believe how much Katie is growing.  She just grins and grins.  I love it.

We have been getting rain almost every evening this week.  Just enough to keep us from working outside.  Oh well, I know rain is really needed.  Everything is really popping out green here, so the rain and the warm temperatures are doing their job.  Our pastor said his peach trees were in full bloom.  I certainly hope they are not too early.

I guess that’s about all for today.  As I said, not much going on.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Spirea Bush

Our spirea bush is also in full bloom.  I love spring!

Yesterday, my Grace did not feel well.  She felt worse as the day progressed.  I finally ended up taking her to Urgent Care late yesterday evening.  She has strep throat.  Not good.  We are praying for a speedy recovery and that the rest of us do not get it.

On now to more pleasant things.  We have lots of sunshine today and the forecast is for warmer temperatures.  Yesterday was a mix of rain, snow, and wind.  It was chilly all day.  We are looking forward to warmer temperatures the rest of the week.  Last nights menu was meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and rolls.  Grace, however, did not eat very much as her throat was hurting.

I plan on only doing half school today.  Sickness and school do not go well together.  I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless.

Spring Time

100_5528

Our forsynthia bush is in full bloom.  I love the bright yellow color, so cheerful.  Today is beautiful here in Floyd.  Temperature is mid 50’s, the sun is shining and the wind is not too aggressive.   Very nice.  I have one load of clothes on the line and another on the way.  We are busy with school and have plans for outside time this afternoon.

Yesterday was a nice day too.  Church was very nice and our evening study went very well with lots of discussion.  Our menu last night was beef roast with potatoes and carrots, green beans, macaroni salad, cookies and peaches.  Very good.  We did hamburgers on the grill for lunch yesterday, with grilled onions and asparagus.  I love cooking on the grill.  I think it makes everything taste so good.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Grundy

Here are a few pictures Grace took on our Grundy trip.  This picture was taken from Granny’s yard looking down on the road.

Granny’s azalea bush in full bloom.

Snowball bush.  We had a great visit.  It is a very different type of terrain there than it is here.  Lots of mountains and lots of trees.  Almost everything is built on a hill.  I enjoy going back to visit but I prefer living here.  Take care and God bless.

Spirea Bush

Another sign of spring.  The spirea bush is in full bloom.  It has beautiful, small white flowers on it.  I think Friday when the ladies come I will make a bouquet of spirea and forsythia blooms.  Very cheerful!  School today as usual.  It is getting so hard to do school as usual. We so want to be outside playing and doing outside chores.  The girls playing-me doing outside chores.  Well, we must persevere.  I know it will  be worth it.  Temperature is very nice here today.  About 80 degrees.  I have clothes drying on the line, blowing in the breeze.  I love hanging clothes outside.  They smell so wonderful.  Tonight’s menu will be homemade pizza.  Last summer, we made several jars of pizza sauce from our tomatoes.  We have almost used them all so I guess we will need to make more this summer than we did last summer.   I think it is important for my girls to know how to raise a garden, to harvest the produce and then how to preserve it for later use.  I think in todays fast paced America this is becoming a lost art.  I was blessed to acquire this knowledge from my mother and I want to pass it down.

100_3168

It tastes as good as it looks.  Enjoy your day and God bless.
