Horseshoe Picnic

100_6387

Yesterday was our second annual horseshoe pitching picnic.  I thought I would share a few pictures with you all.  We had a great time with lots of good food (of course), good fellowship and good music.   I think that hammock is calling my name!

The Lord blessed us with a beautiful day.

Our VBS starts tonight.  The girls will be playing the music all 5 nights.  Julie is in charge of the games tomorrow night.  When did my babies become workers instead of just participants?  Well, it does this mama’s heart good to see them serving the Lord.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Our First Harvest

100_6362

We are starting to enjoy the fruit of our labor.  I know its a small amount but the first is always the best.  We love it when the garden starts coming in.

Yesterday we went over to the Horn’s.  Vicki put some of my old schoolbooks on ebay for me.  I have never sold anything on ebay.  They only allowed us to put 10 items.  Hopefully, they will sell and then we will put more.  We’ll see.  Anyway, thanks again Vicki, for helping me.  The girls had a great time playing as usual.  Vicki showed me some pictures of projects she wants to do this summer.  It was a really good visit.  After that we had piano lessons.  While the girls did their lessons, I did some grocery shopping.  We were out of chick feed so I picked some up.  They are starting on the layer crumbles now.  Hopefully, soon, we will be gathering eggs.  So exciting.

I better get busy.  Clothes to hang on the line (as usual).  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Raspberries

100_6361

Our raspberries are getting ripe!  YUMMY!!!!  Black raspberries are one of my favorite fruits.  We have a few vines we have been working on getting established and it looks like this year we might get enough to make a cobbler at least.  (if we can keep the birds out of them)

Yesterday was a nice day.  We came back from church and cooked steak on the grill in honor of Dad’s day.  Steak on the grill is Hubby’s favorite meal.  We had fries with it, rolls and ice cream for dessert.  Our pastor’s sermon was very good.  It was of course directed mostly to the men in the church.  He preached on Ezekiel 22:30.  The verse says “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land.  I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land but I found none.”  He challenged our men to be the one that could stand in the gap.  It was a very powerful message.

Temperature here this morning is wonderful.  Low 60’s with a pretty strong wind.  Great for drying clothes.  I have one load ready to hang out and several more to go.  The girls and I have many errands to run today plus piano lessons.  I guess I better get busy.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Monday evening Julie and I were outside letting the chicks run free for a while and this is what we saw.  God is so good to show us glimpses of His glory.

Sorry I did not make a post yesterday.  As you know we went down to Jessica’s on Monday for her ultrasound appointment.  Well, this baby did not cooperate.  He or she decided no one was going to look that day.  All kinds of movement but legs crossed.  They told her they would do one more a little later on.  I guess this is a shy one or stubborn-not sure which.

Yesterday the girls and I went with Hubby to help him work.  He is doing the sheetrock on a remodeling job.  He can do it all by himself except hang ceilings.  That is just too hard to do alone.    The house is in a beautiful location.  If we go back with him another day, I’ll try to remember to take the camera so you all can see some pictures of it.

Today we’ll work on catching up here at home.  How can a house get so dirty when no one is home?    This morning was very chilly here-42 degrees when we got up this morning.  Yesterday was really nice.  Hubby’s van tells the outside temperature and it was 70 degrees when we left the job site yesterday around 3:00.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Cherries

100_6217

Look at these beautiful cherries.  David’s mother has 2 of these cherries trees in her yard.  She graciously gave them to us.  Thank you, Donna.  We went down Friday morning as Hubby was having difficulties with his computer too.  While Dave and Hubby worked on the computer, Jess and I with the kids went to pick cherries.  We picked 3 gal. and didn’t even hardly take a step.

100_6218

Look at how the limbs are just bowed down to the ground.  You could just stand and pick.  No tree or ladder climbing.  I really liked that.

100_6219

We ended up staying Friday night and most of the day Saturday getting Hubby’s computer up and going.  When we came home I put the cherries in our steamer juicer.  We got 5 1/2 qts of juice.

Sunday morning just before we left to go to church, Jess calls and says Dave needs Hubby’s help.  Their shower drain has come loose and flooded under the house and the heat pump was not working.  This of course means no air conditioner and for a pregnant woman that was bad.  It is really hot where they live with lots of humidity.  Well, we changed clothes and headed down to help Dave.  While the men went to Lowes, the girls and I went to pick more cherries.  We got 2 1/2 gal.  I have one batch in the steamer juicer now.  I think I will make jelly from some of the juice and then just can the rest.  It is very good.  We had fresh cherry juice with our breakfast this morning.  The Lord is so good to provide us with treats like that.

Well, I have clothes to go on the line and much to do today.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Wild Roses

100_6213

Remember the rose bush up by the fence that had not bloomed yet.  Well, this is it.  It is full of tiny white bloom.  Very pretty.

100_6215

I thought I would share with you all how my plants look.  This is what the cucumbers looked like before we transplanted them.

100_6216

This is what they look like now and this is one of the better looking ones.  Oh well, live and learn.  I am going today to a local greenhouse and hopefully get some cucumber plants.  Yesterday, after school, the girls and I worked on weeded some of our flower beds.  We planted some cosmos seed, some columbine and some seeds that just said “cut flowers”.  It is a little late getting the seeds in the ground but I think they will still have time to make flowers.

Temperature here is beautiful.  70 with sunshine and a good steady wind.  I have clothes ready for the line and another load to wash.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Trout Fest

100_6143

Remember a similar picture from last year.  Same little girl perched on the drainpipe.  Obviously she really likes the spot.

100_6162

Now its brothers turn to sit for a while.  We really had a nice day with about 90 people showing up all total.  After we came home from the fishing we worked in the upper garden.  Hubby tilled, and the girls and I set out the plants.  They looked great.  But then they wilted badly.   We watered them when we planted them, again the next morning and again yesterday evening before we went to church.  Last night the Lord watered them for us so we are hoping they look better now.  I haven’t went up to the garden yet to check on them.  If they do not perk up, I am afraid they will not survive.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

We plan on going over to the Horns today for lunch and some play time then on to piano practice.  I don’t think I told you all but we have ducklings now-12 of them.  They are very shy and it is hard to get a picture of them.  Mama duck keeps them hid most of the time.  I’ll keep trying though.

Time for us to get busy.  I have a load of clothes to hang out on the line and several more to get done.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Snowball bloom

100_5933

We have a very small snowball bush that was given to us last year by a friend from church.  I was not sure it would survive the winter but it did and now has one beautiful bloom on it.  It also has several new starts coming up from the root.  Next year we are hoping for lots of bloom.

Yesterday the girls and I went to big town.  We needed chicken feed and a few other things.  We went to Books-A-Million, which is a big treat for us.  We used to have one in Christiansburg but they moved to Blacksburg.  The girls had some money they had been saving.  They each bought a new book with their money.  I found this documentary in the bargain DVD basket.   I am thinking of using it some for next year’s history course.

100_5998

We have had several days of fog and rain.  Today, though, the sun is peeking through the fog.  Hopefully the weekend will be nice.  Dave, Jess, and the boys are supposed to come up for the weekend.  Our church is having a clay shoot tomorrow.  Dave is going with Hubby to shoot and the rest of us are going to a big yard and craft sale here in Floyd.  We hope to picnic Sunday and celebrate Hubby’s birthday.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Goslings

100_5898

They sure have grown!  Every time I see them they look so much bigger.  We discovered this morning that we have a female mallard duck nesting on the island now.  We are so excited!  We have wanted ducks to nest there since we moved here.  We’ve not sure why the ducks and the geese have decided that the island is now nest worthy but we sure are glad.  There is a big difference between the ducks and the geese.  The ducks are more secretive and the male is less aggressive.  Papa Goose is always on patrol, keeping away all others.

I know it has been a long time since I made a post.  I have been busy this week helping Hubby with a job he had building a fence.  The girls took their school books and did school in the van while I helped him.  Last night the girls had their piano recital.  It all went very well.  They did a good job on their songs.    We have been busy this morning getting the yard mowed and other things that needed doing around the house.

On Tuesday, I attempted to make homemade cottage cheese.  It DID NOT  turn out.  I’m not sure what I did wrong.  I followed the directions I got from the internet.  I think I need a different recipe.  Have any of you all ever made cottage cheese?  I sure would appreciate all info I can get.

100_5914

The girls found new kittens today in one of the old buildings.  It is always so exciting for them when they find new kittens.  These belong to one of our wild cats so we have no idea if she will leave them where they are or not.  Only time will tell.  We have much to do so I better get busy.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Our Greenhouse

100_5607

Yesterday the girls and I decided to try our hand at making a greenhouse.  We found these old metal things in the field behind the house.  They were used as a round bale holder but had been broken years ago.

100_5614

Then we planted our seed and put the metal “thingie” over it.

100_5625

Then we covered them with plastic.  All of this is recycled material.  The only cost to us was the seeds.  We have never tried anything like this before.  I have attempted to start seeds indoors many different times but always with no success.  They grow too fast and then just die out so we just buy plants already started and use them.  I got this idea from my blogger friend at http://holcombhappenings.wordpress.com/.   Thanks, Cheryl.  We have about 30 days before danger of frost is over for us.  We are hoping our seeds will produce and we will be able to transplant them.  If this does well, I want to start our seeds earlier next year.    Anyway, it was a very nice day yesterday and we had a lot of fun making our greenhouse and planting our seeds.

Enjoy your day and God bless.
