Wednesday

I thought I would share this picture of Katie that Dave posted on facebook.  She certainly is growing.  Thanks Grace for helping me do this.

Things have been moving along rapidly here.  Friday we went down to Jessica’s to fix a railing on her porch.  Saturday, Jess and the kids came up to us for a visit.  Dave is down to the wire on finishing his book.  She thought he might get more done on it if they were out of the house.  It was a really nice visit.  It had been a while since they had been up.

Jess and I went in halves on a 50 lb bag of soft white wheat.  This is totally different from what I am used to using.  I have always used Prairie Gold wheat.  Supposedly, soft white wheat is for things that use baking powder not yeast. I have had a hard time learning how to bake with it.  I made chocolate chip cookies Saturday that were FLAT and I do mean flat.  Anyway Daniel said they were delicious!  Gotta love that boy!!  So I think I have finally cured the problem.  Because I freshly grind the wheat kernels, they are “fluffy”.  I need to add 1/4 cup more flour for every 1 cup the recipe calls for.  I did that this morning with some more cookies and they turned out fine.  Next trial-pie crusts.  Our rhubarb is up and I think there is enough to make a pie.  I want to try this recipe http://theblessedhearth.blogspot.com/2013/04/theres-nothing-so-sweet-as.html

We are moving right along with school.  I think we will be finished by the end of May if all goes as planned.  We are looking forward to summer break this year.  Lots of fun stuff going on.

Well, I guess that’s about all that’s going on here.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

An Unusual Visitor

Hello ladies!  I just wanted to thank all of you for your prayers.  The visit at the doctor today went well.  The doctor is treating him for a kidney infection which she thinks is definitely part of his problem.  She also wants him to come back in 3 weeks for more blood work.  There is a possibility he is a diabetic.  Thank you all again for your prayers.

I also wanted to show you these pictures of a visitor we had at the pond the other day.  Our pond has been seeing LOTS of activity.  The morning this guy came in we had about 60 geese and several ducks there.  They are lots of fun to watch.

I have no idea what type of goose this is, maybe he is a domestic breed.  I don’t know but he sure did stick out from the rest.   We also had a visit from these quys.

There were 2 males and one female.  The males were so aggressive.  They fought most of the day.  I’m not sure which one ended up being the victor but today when the ducks came back there was only one male and one female.  I guess one of the males finally gave up.

I hope you all have a wonderful evening and God bless.

A Ride Down The Parkway

Hello everyone!  I thought I would share a few pictures from along our beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway.  It is lovely this time of year.

I have always loved this church sitting upon the hill.  Saturday was a wood cutting day here.  Chuck and his family came over to help.  We brought down 2 huge trees.  We got them all cut and brought home.  We still have to split them though.  It was a really fun day. Chuck’s girlfriend had never been part of wood cutting. (She’s a town girl).  I think she had a good time though.  The kids had lots of fun.

Today the girls and I went to Roanoke to pick up a few things.  We went walking through the mall, which is something we don’t do very often.  I stepped into Macy’s-my first time.  You all remember that I have been looking for a hard anodized pot to use for cooking down my sauces.  One like Mrs. Sally let me borrow this summer.  Well, they had one on sale for 1/2 price!!  Yeah, me!!!  I was very happy.  I very seldom come across deals like that.  I certainly am glad I walked into that store.

Well, that’s about all that’s been happening here.  I hope you all have a great day and God bless.

Wednesday

Hi everyone.  I’m sorry about no pictures lately but I have been having trouble with my computer.  Hopefully all is fixed now.  Saturday, Dave, Jess and kids came up for a visit.  Dave and Hubby went to Pastor Tom’s shoot.  They had a great time.  Then on Saturday afternoon, Chuck and his kids came over too.  I was one happy mawmaw.  All my grandbabies here at one time.  I hope this becomes a habit.  We all went to cut wood.  I so wish I had taken my camera.  It was so cute seeing them all carrying wood to load in the truck.  Everyone went.  We even had Katie and Sam in the stroller, which did not make Sam happy.  He kept saying, “I wanna help PawPaw too.”  We thought Sam might be a little too much “help.”

We had a great supper of pork, pintos, mashed potatoes, rolls, peaches and pears.  After cutting, loading and unloading two truck loads of wood, everyone was hungry.  As they were leaving, I gave them all an apple for the road.  Alexius was getting in the car and got her finger shut in the car door.  Chuck asked her how she managed to do that and she said, “I was trying to hold my apple and I wanted to give MawMaw another hug”.  I felt so sorry for her.

I have been helping Hubby all this week with a bathroom remodel.  We finished it today.  Tomorrow, he will start installing the cabinets at the old farmhouse he has been working on.  We plan on going with the Horn’s this Saturday to Grayson Highlands for their fall festival.  We are looking forward to it.  It sounds like lots of fun.  Well, I think that’s about all that is happening around here.  I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

Sunday

Hello everyone!!  Yesterday was our annual horseshoe picnic, however, being how I am I forgot the camera.  I did take pictures last year so if any of you haven’t saw where we do our horseshoe picnic, you can check out last year’s pictures here:  https://merryheartcrafts.com/2011/06/26/horseshoe-picnic/

We had a great time yesterday, with lots of good food(of course).  After eating we played horseshoes, had some pickin’ and grinnin’ (I did the grinnin’) and all around good fellowship.  I think we are very blessed at our church.  We have lots of fun together.  Next Sunday, will be our annual picnic and baptizing at Gallimore Pond.  We do not have a baptismal at our church.  We baptize at a beautiful pond that is close to our church.  And, of course, while we are there, we might as well eat.  The next Sunday will be our annual Sunday School breakfast at Smart View Park, just about a mile from our house.  We eat a wonderful breakfast and then have Sunday School.  There’s just something about eating outdoors that I love.  Every time we are having a church service out in the open like that, I feel so blessed to live in this country and so thankful to everyone who has sacrificed in one way or another so that we can freely worship where ever we choose.   There is just something special about the sound of hymns as they float through the trees. We take so much for granted here in this country.

Okay, sorry about going on like that but it is how I feel.  Tonight is our last study lesson on Titus.  I think we are going to do Exodus next.  Not sure though, we will decide tonight.  I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

Around the Pond

The other day we all decided to take a walk around the pond.  It has been absolutely beautiful here in Floyd this week.  Our morning temperatures have been mid 40’s.  Amazing!!  Wonderful sleeping weather.  The days have only gotten into the mid 70’s.  I love it.  For my part, the Good Lord could just let it be this way all summer and I would be happy.

7456197134_1a31147222_z

The girls had lots of fun.  They came in the house and got their wading shoes and spent lots of time wading in the pond.  Jasper even joined them for a while.  He doesn’t care much for water.  I suppose after his accident the first winter, he thinks water isn’t much fun.

Lots of cool bugs were flying around the pond.

7456198192_24f38b2b7e_z

I have no idea what they are but if you look closely you can see the tiny blue bugs that were hovering around the blade of grass.

We have so many of these birds.  I couldn’t tell for sure from the picture if they were barn swallows or tree swallows.  Both birds are abundant here.  They will fly down to the pond and touch the water.  It is amazing to watch.  Sometimes as many as 50 or more just skipping above the water.  I’m not sure if they are getting a drink or catching bugs but it is one of our favorite evening passtimes to watch them.

I hope you all have a wonderful evening and God bless.

Grapes

100_9413

This picture of our grapevine was taken on April 12.  This is what it looked like last week.

100_9557

It seems to be growing every day and full of baby grapes!

100_9556

This makes me very happy.  I hope to make some jelly this year and lots and lots of grape juice!  We so enjoy having our own juice to drink.

Our weekend was a busy one.  I didn’t get to tell all about it on yesterdays post.  It was late and I was tired.  Anyway, on Friday, our church had a mother/daughter banquet.  It was lots of fun with about 25 ladies attending.  Then on Saturday, we had to go to Jessica’s to start working on some things her ins. agency said needed to be done.   After we got there, Hubby realized we would need the scaffold, so we came back home Saturday evening.  We went back down on Sunday and finished it up.  Jess, the kids, myself, Julie and Grace went to the Farmers Market on Sunday.  We had a great time just walking around looking at everything.  Okay, so I have to tell you, we rode Jessica’s van to the market.  7 of us.  We took the double stroller and the small stroller, plus, of course, all the other stuff you need for small kids.  Needless to say, her van was packed.  Then when we get there, the first thing Jess sees-2 HUGE hanging baskets, that would look just perfect on her front porch.  Now if you would like to have seen something funny, you should have been there in the parking lot watching us try to get all that stuff back in the van.  It really was hilarious!!  We finally did it though and didn’t even damage her new hanging baskets.  I guess we are just talented.

Our lunch break is over and so I must get back to school.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Wednesday

Today has been a good day here in Floyd.   The girls and I decided it was definitely time to put up the Christmas tree.  We had lots of fun.   We put on some Christmas music and got busy.   They decorated the gingerbread house.  Then we put up the tree, the nativity, and a few other decorations.   Simple, nothing too complex.  Temperatures here have been much warmer than normal.  I like that.

Our van is fixed.  YEAH!  Dave, Jess and the kids came up Sunday so Dave could help Hubby work on it.  Thanks so much, Dave!  Hubby finished getting it all put back together Monday.  Monday evening we rode it to the feed store to get chicken feed and everything worked fine.  Yesterday, the girls and I rode it to Sam’s.  No problems!!  I am so glad.

Yesterday, the boys had a terrible stomach virus.  They were both very sick.  Daniel was hit especially hard.  He told his mom he felt like he was living in a bad dream.  Today they both seem on the mend.  We are all praying no one else gets it.  Jess said that baby Sam was calling for his “Maw” when he was sick in the night.  You know that just touches my heart.  We are hoping to go down Saturday to do Christmas with them.  Lots of good food planned.

Well, I guess that’s about all that has been going on here.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

An Old Leather Project

100_5065

This is a picture of an old leather book bag I made when I was in college.  It is roughly 35 years old (I guess I am really telling my age now).  As you can see, it gets a lot of use.  I’m not even sure what the stain is at the bottom but its been on it for a very long time.  I used to work a lot with leather.  I have made purses, moccasins, walets, lots and lots of belts.  Hubby also has done lots of leather work.  He more than me actually.  He used to run a leather shop, back when we were younger.  He made a knife sheath for our old pastor about 2 years ago.  Other than that we have not done leather work in many years.  We do still have our tools though.  We have talked some about getting them out and working some with the girls.  Teaching them how to make things.  Leather is just so expensive but I think it would be lots of fun.

100_5066

This is a picture I did.  Once again, many years ago.  I won 2nd place in a craft fair with it.   Looking at these reminds me of how much fun working with leather is.  Well, so much for my walk down memory lane.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

A Slight Breeze

100_4803

We have a slight breeze here in Floyd today.  Well, okay maybe more than a slight breeze but not a hard wind.  Just perfect for drying clothes on the line.  When the wind is blowing like this, the clothes are so soft when they get dry.  We had a busy weekend but lots of fun.  The girls and I went to Sam’s Club Saturday and picked up a few things.  Before that we went to one of our local malls and walked around, just looking.  This is something we never do, so that made it special.  They have already started putting up their Christmas stuff.  It was so much fun.  Yesterday was church day.  The pastors sermon was very good.  He compared being a soldier in the Armed Forces with being a soldier in God’s army.  He did a really good job.  Last nights menu was soup, pinto beans, cornbread, tator tot casserole, cooked apples and carrot cake.  Very good.

Today we are doing Grace’s birthday party.  We are going over to our friends the Horns to celebrate.  Vicki is making the cake and I am taking some homemade chicken noodle soup.  We are all looking forward to a great day.  I know I have said it before, but we are very blessed by the Lord to have the Horns in our life.  We so appreciate their friendship.

Well, I gotta go party.  Take care and God bless.
