Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a good weekend! It is an exciting day today for me. I am starting my pepper seeds! Pictured above are the varieties I have chosen for this year.
Many of these are new (to me) varieties and I am very excited to try them. I am wanting to do heirlooms in the garden this summer so I can save seeds from everything. I really enjoy seed saving so all of these are heirloom except the gypsy pepper. These are my favorite peppers though so I had to make room for them.
I hope y’all have a great day and God bless.
Good morning everyone! It is a beautiful Saturday morning here in Floyd. Our temperature dropped significantly last night. It was down to 19° when I got up this morning. I am sure our wind chill was in the single digits but I forgot to check. Definitely cold!
So this morning as I was feeding, watching these cute ladies, I thought chickens bring me so much joy! During the (long) short days of winter when egg production comes almost to a complete stop, it is tempting to think they are just a bunch of freeloaders, requiring feed, multiple trips daily in the cold to check on them and getting no eggs in return.
But then spring comes! The days become longer and brighter. They sing to me every morning! They give us eggs! They are happy chickens and in return their presence gives me great joy!
God bless!
Good morning everyone! I hope you have all had a good week. We are good here. Weather has been really nice this week. I’ve been doing garden maintenance. We are getting some much needed rain this morning though and the temperature is supposed to drop by evening.
Check out the new seed varieties I got at Dollar General. These were only $1 a pack. I love that! All of these are new varieties to me so I am very excited to see how they do.
You might notice a new look to my blog. Dave has been working on updating it this week. I love how it looks! Thank you so much, Dave!
I guess that’s about all for now. God bless!
Good morning everyone! Just look at these beautiful seedlings! Both cabbages and both broccoli have already sprouted!
Also some of the basil. This makes me so happy!
To me, there is something so exciting about planting a seed in the dirt, seeing it become a seedling and knowing, God willing, that seedling will produce food for my family! God never ceases to amaze me❤
Yesterday Dave came over to fix a water leak out in one of our buildings. It happily was a quick fix. The older kids were coming over to play dnd with Grace so Dave, Jess John Luke and I decided to go to Rural King for a little outing. I needed to get a new door handle for one of our storm doors.
John Luke loved the baby chicks. He wanted to hold them all!
When we got back home, Grace and the kiddos had a huge surprise for me. After they finished playing their game, they went up to the garden and moved 31 wheelbarrows of mulch and spread it out.
The garden is already looking so pretty for spring! This was such a sweet surprise!
I hope you all have a great day and God bless!
Good morning everyone! I hope your week has been good. We are good here. It is windy this morning and the temperature is expected to drop tonight down in the lower teens. Winter isn’t done yet!
However, I am starting to look toward spring and the upcoming garden. I try to plant by what mountain folks call “the signs”. It means I plant by the moon phases. So February 1st, 2nd and 3rd were good days for starting seeds for above ground plants. Yesterday I started Golden Acre and Red Acre cabbage, regular and purple broccoli, cauliflower, sugar rush and shishito peppers. I also started some herbs, lovage, thyme, green and purple basil, oregano, dill, chives, cilantro and parsley.
I should point out that I start herb seeds every year and very seldom have success in growing them out big enough to transplant. I almost always have to buy plants at our local nursery. I do, however, enjoy trying and maybe one day I’ll figure it out.
Just a little shout out to Dave. He printed me these little tools several years ago. I love them and use them all the time when starting seeds and working with transplants. They are definitely a big help.
So this is what they look like. They are in the sitting room right now. I haven’t put the cover on the greenhouse yet. We’ll see how that goes. Juicy, my cat, likes to pull my seedlings up so I’m sure I’ll have to put it on soon. I also have not put up the grow light or the heat mats. Probably won’t do that until March when I start the tomatoes and peppers. We’ll see if these germinate without the heat mat.
Enjoy your day and God bless!
