Getting Started

Good morning everyone! I hope your week has been good. We are good here. It is windy this morning and the temperature is expected to drop tonight down in the lower teens. Winter isn’t done yet!

However, I am starting to look toward spring and the upcoming garden. I try to plant by what mountain folks call “the signs”. It means I plant by the moon phases. So February 1st, 2nd and 3rd were good days for starting seeds for above ground plants. Yesterday I started Golden Acre and Red Acre cabbage, regular and purple broccoli, cauliflower, sugar rush and shishito peppers. I also started some herbs, lovage, thyme, green and purple basil, oregano, dill, chives, cilantro and parsley.

I should point out that I start herb seeds every year and very seldom have success in growing them out big enough to transplant. I almost always have to buy plants at our local nursery. I do, however, enjoy trying and maybe one day I’ll figure it out.

Just a little shout out to Dave. He printed me these little tools several years ago. I love them and use them all the time when starting seeds and working with transplants. They are definitely a big help.

So this is what they look like. They are in the sitting room right now. I haven’t put the cover on the greenhouse yet. We’ll see how that goes. Juicy, my cat, likes to pull my seedlings up so I’m sure I’ll have to put it on soon. I also have not put up the grow light or the heat mats. Probably won’t do that until March when I start the tomatoes and peppers. We’ll see if these germinate without the heat mat.

Enjoy your day and God bless!
