An Old Leather Project

100_5065

This is a picture of an old leather book bag I made when I was in college.  It is roughly 35 years old (I guess I am really telling my age now).  As you can see, it gets a lot of use.  I’m not even sure what the stain is at the bottom but its been on it for a very long time.  I used to work a lot with leather.  I have made purses, moccasins, walets, lots and lots of belts.  Hubby also has done lots of leather work.  He more than me actually.  He used to run a leather shop, back when we were younger.  He made a knife sheath for our old pastor about 2 years ago.  Other than that we have not done leather work in many years.  We do still have our tools though.  We have talked some about getting them out and working some with the girls.  Teaching them how to make things.  Leather is just so expensive but I think it would be lots of fun.

This is a picture I did.  Once again, many years ago.  I won 2nd place in a craft fair with it.   Looking at these reminds me of how much fun working with leather is.  Well, so much for my walk down memory lane.

Enjoy your day and God bless.

Old Things

100_5028

Today I was doing some much needed cleaning on the shelves that hold my teapots.  I came across this old cream and sugar set.  There is a story that goes with these.  These are approximatedly 75 years old.  They belonged to my mother.  She said when she was a very young girl-about 6 or 8 yrs old-an old peddler came by their house riding a horse.   On his horse, he had several saddle bags filled with trinkets to sell.  One of them was the cream and sugar set.  She said she remembered begging her dad to buy them for her.  I guess she must have given him the right look because as you can see he did purchase them.  My grandfather was a logger and money was not easy to come by.  This set always held a special place in her heart.   Every time she would clean them up, she would tell me this story so today, as I cleaned them, I told my girls how this particular set came to be in our home.   Memories are special.  They need to be shared.

This is another old set I have.  The sugar bowl was my grandmothers and the cream pitcher was my mother-in-laws.  Hubby bought me the teapot several years ago.  All I need now are some cups and saucers to match.

Tonights supper is homemade soup.  I am making a new bread recipe to go with it.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.  Enjoy your evening and God bless.

Working Hard

100_5005

Hubby worked some more today on splitting wood.  He wanted to know why I took this picture of him splitting a toothpick, why didn’t I get him splitting a real piece of wood.  100_5007

Julie splitting her first piece of wood.

Grace getting ready to split her first piece.  All girls need to know how to split wood.  After practicing splitting, we got busy and hauled all that Hubby had split into the wood building and stacked it up.  He almost has all the wood split that we have cut so we will soon have to cut more.  Oh the joys of heating with wood!  Seriously, it is a lot of work but it is definitely good heat and all it costs us is our work.  Not a bad trade in my opinion.

We worked on school today, did some house cleaning.  The ladies will be coming tomorrow for bible study.  Supper tonight is baked spaghetti with lots of mozzarella cheese and home made garlic breadsticks.  We also have some cushaw pie left with whipped cream.

Enjoy your evening and God bless.

Wednesday

I hope you all are not tired of sunrise pictures.  I just love a beautiful sunrise and we get some amazing ones here.   I thought this one this morning was especially beautiful.

Today while the girls worked on school, I worked on the dreaded refrigerators.  We have two refrigerators here in the house.  One is a side by side and the other is just a regular refrigerator with the freezer on top.   So many little cups of this and cups of that had been stored over the holidays.  It was getting impossible to find space to put new cups of this and that.  I decided enough was enough.  I cleaned both of them out completely, removed the shelves and washed them.  I stood back and looked at them and was amazed at how much better they looked.  Empty but better.  So good that I decided to do the freezers too.  Amazing!  I actually have space in the fridges and the freezers now.   I thought I would never get all those containers washed.  I decided since the girls were working so hard on school, I would let them out of that chore today.  Thats one job I am glad to have done.

While we were inside working on this Hubby was busy splitting wood. (Dave, he has your splitting maul sharpened and ready for you!)  After we were finished inside, we went out and helped him move all the split wood inside the wood building.  It was a fairly nice day for working outside.  Temperature was around 30 degrees with occasional sunshine.

Enjoy your evening and God bless.

Sunday

Yesterday was such a fun day for us.  We decided to take the girls to the movies as part of their Christmas gift.  As we very seldom go to the movies, this was a big treat.  We found (thanks to our friends, the Horns) a movie theater that is affordable and family friendly.  We watched The Chronicles of Narnia-Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  It was a very good movie and we all had a great time.  Grace has read the book and Julie is in process now of reading it.

Also, as my aprons are now being sold in a local store, I thought it would be nice to try out some different patterns.  I had been told it would be nice if I could do matching aprons.  One for Mom (or MawMaw)and one for a little girl.  I found a pattern I like pretty well.  Here is a picture of it.

Not exactly what I was looking for but a good place to start.

100_4969

This is the material I picked out.  The floral will be the main material and the striped will be the contrasting material.  What do you all think?   I am having difficulties with my sewing maching, so pray I can get it up and running soon.  (Could be the operator, who knows!)  Anyway, I am excited to start a new project and upping my abilities.  I have not made many things from a real pattern.  Usually, its something I just figure out on my own or I alter the pattern so that it fits my abilities.  Sally, our pastor’s wife, has agreed to help me if I get in over my head.  I don’t think I will though.  It looks pretty easy on paper.  I will show you the finished results when done.

I think I’ll go check out my machine.  Take care and God bless.

Gingerbread House

100_4902

Every year the girls and I try to do a gingerbread house for our centerpiece at Christmas time.  We did this one last night.  We always have so much fun decorating it and last night was no exception.  Good family memories.  I think it looks very festive on the table.

We had a dusting of snow this morning.  Enough to excite the girls anyway.  It actually was warmer this morning than it has been.  We are already at 32 degrees.  I did my walk this morning, which felt really good.  I have had to do inside exercises this week due to the weather.  I much prefer outside but, you know, you got to go with the flow.  I am not dedicated enough to walk in 3″ of water with 40 mph wind gusts.  Maybe someday but not today.

Here is a picture of the new study we are starting today.  I think it will be very good.  This week’s lesson was on Eve.  Next week we will be studying Rahab and Mary Magdalene.  Well, I better get busy.  The ladies will be here in just a few minutes.  God bless.

Gilbert

100_4860

Daniel’s little kitten, Gilbert, taking a much needed rest under the Christmas tree.  He certainly is a cute kitten.  Very fuzzy.  Sam’s eyes light up every time he sees Gilbert.  He would love to sink his chubby little hands into all that fur.

We had a fun day yesterday.  We went over to our friends, the Horns.  Vicki fixed us lunch, then while the kids played, we make some gingersnap cookies.  They were very good.  We also tried our hand at making some breakfast bars or as we call them energy bars.  They did not turn out near as well as I had hoped.  Not too bad just not as I envisoned them being.  We all had a lot of fun though.  God is so good to provide us with friends like the Horns.  We feel very blessed that they are in our lives.

We had so much rain here the first of the week.  I have no idea how much but I know it was a lot.  Everything was soaking wet.  Water was standing in so many places in our yard.  After the rain, temperatures took a drop.  It dropped about 20 degrees from yesterday morning till this morning.  The sun is shining though so hopefully things will warm up some.  I would like to hang my sheets on the line.

The girls and I have lots to get done today so we better get busy.  God bless.

Pinwheel Candy

100_4885

It is raining outside today.  We did not want to go to the building to get decorations so we just decided to make some candy.  I usually make this only at Christmas time but I should make it more often as it is one of everyone’s favorite.   This recipe came from a dear friend of mine and I have used it now for about 25 years.  Wow, that makes me feel old(maybe I should leave that sentence out).   Anyway the recipe is:

1/4 cup butter-softened, 1 tsp vanilla.  Gradually add in 1 box powdered sugar.  You will need to add a little evaporated milk at the end-only add about 1 tbsp at a time.  1-3 tbsp should be all you will need.  It needs to be a little dry.  Roll out and spread on peanut butter.  Roll up candy length wise and put in fridge until chilled.  Cut and enjoy.

Just a little note about the lady who gave me this recipe.  Her name was Vanessa Looney and she was one of the finest Christian ladies I have ever known.  When it became obvious to those who loved her that it would soon be time for her to be with the Lord, she made a profound statement to me.  We were talking and she said “You know, I am not afraid of dying.  I have lived my entire life for this moment.  I will finally see my Jesus.”  I consider this one of the most important statements a Christian could ever make-that we would all live our lives for the moment we will see Him.   Just a little remembering on my part.

Well, I best be going.  My girls want to play a game of cards.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Our First Decoration

100_4878

This is our first decoration of the season.  I like to use decoration that will work for all winter, not just for Christmas.  This is due to laziness on my part.  I so enjoy putting them up but not so much taking them down.  This way I get to leave them up longer.   Both my girls are sick, so today has been a rather slow day for us.  We only did what we call “half school” which was bible, math and language.  Then we took a break, went up to the building and found our little village.   This village sets every year on this table.  When the girls were younger, it was continuously getting rearranged.  They would play with the houses and the people for hours.   My dad built this table for my mom when they first got married.  There is a shelf underneath and when I was a little girl, my golden book collection sat on the lower shelf.  Funny, the things we remember.   After decorating, we enjoyed a game of cards and now they are upstairs playing a board game.  I so enjoy days like today-just sorry my girls don’t feel well.

It is chilly here with rain moving in.  A good day for enjoying the fire and each other.  I pray your day has been as enjoyable as mine.  God bless.

A Mountain of Rolls

100_4846

One of the things I am taking tomorrow for our thanksgiving meal at church will be these rolls.  I froze them ahead of time and have been baking them all day today.  The one difference I have noticed is that the frozen dough did not rise as much as it would if it had not been frozen.  They taste the same though and I guess thats what counts.  I am also making cinnamon rolls to take.  Not sure what else yet.  After our meal, the youth of our church will go shopping.  Every year they get two  “angels” from the angel tree.  A boy and a girl.  Each family in the church contributes $5.00.  Then the youth go shopping.  They boys buy for the boy and the girls buy for the girl.  It is a very nice tradition.  Our youth really look forward to going.   One year, they were shopping and picked out something they wanted to buy and they were a little short on the  money needed to buy it.  One of the boys said he had some extra from a job he had done that week.  He gave the extra so they could purchase the item.  I love that.   Children being raised to give generously and without expecting anything in return.

Yesterday I had a WONDERFUL surprise.  Jessica and Sam came up for a visit.  I did not know they were coming.  They just walked in the door.  I was so happy.  Daniel and David were at home.  She stayed until after lunch.  The bible study ladies had not gotten to see Sam yet.  It was a great surprise.  Have I mentioned I love happy surprises?

Beautiful day here in Floyd.  Very nice temperatures with lots of sunshine.  A great day for being outside.  Enjoy your day and God bless.
