Thursday

Wow, look at me!  Two posts in one week!  Maybe I am getting back on track.  I am learning how to use Hubby’s computer.  Now to relearn how to put pictures on using his computer.  Well, maybe next post will have a picture!!

Tuesday, the girls and I canned a bushel of green beans.  We had 24 qts.  Yesterday, we had friends over for supper.  We had beef roast, green beans fresh from the garden, and a stir fry of garden veggies.  It was a good evening.  We enjoyed good food and good fellowship.  Today, we are eating lunch with the Horn’s.  We are looking forward to some time with them.  From there, we are going to help Mrs. Retia with some of her beans.

Last Saturday was our church’s annual horseshoe picnic.  We usually have it at a little picnic area down at the river but we have had so much rain that the road was washed out and we couldn’t get there.  So we had it at the same place we have our Sportsman Banquet-the Coon Hunters Club.  What can I say-we are a church full of hunters and shooters.  Any way, we had a great time, good food and good music.

Well, I guess that’s about it.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

I thought I would show you all a few more snow pictures.  This picture is of our road.

Floyd is full of old barns.

Papa Goose standing guard.  Mama Goose is already nesting!  Hopefully, we will soon have lots of goslings swimming around.  We are not sure of Mama Duck is nesting or not. I guess time will tell.

I am trying a new recipe for hamburger buns.  I got the recipe from here.  http://penniesandpancakes.blogspot.ca/  I’ll let you all know how they turn out.  I am making them using all whole wheat flour.  I’m not sure how that will go over with everyone. I usually do half whole wheat and half all purpose but I am hoping to move us over to more all whole wheat.  We are having hamburgers (on the homemade buns), french fries and cole slaw for supper.

I also wanted to tell you all how much we like the new yogurt recipe I have been making.  I have the recipe here vanilla yogurt.  I am making another batch today for us and will be making one tomorrow to take down to Jessica when we go.  This yogurt is kinda sweet and flavored.  It is delicious served with fresh fruit.  We like that much better than plain yogurt.  I think I will substitute strawberry flavoring for the vanilla next time and see how that turns out.

Well, time for lunch.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Monday

Hello everyone!  I hope you all had a great weekend.  Things were kinda slow for us-just the way we like it.  We didn’t do much of anything on Saturday, just normal cleaning chores.  Yesterday,  we had a nice day at church.  My Secret Sister gave me a tin of homemade cake pops.  They were delicious.  We came home, ate lunch and then the girls and I went to the movie theater.  We very seldom go to the theater.  It is reserved for big treats.  We usually try to go at Christmas time as part of their Christmas gift.  We then went to Wal-Mart and finished up some shopping.  Everyone is coming to our house Saturday for our Christmas get together.

Not much else going on here.  I am making another batch of homemade yogurt.  This time using the pureed fruit.  Supper tonight is cabbage casserole, pintos and cornbread.  We are warm here today-mid 40’s.  I do not have a fire as of yet.  We are holding off as long as possible.

I hope you all have a great day.  God bless.

What We’ve Been Up To

The temperatures here have been wonderful.  Upper 50’s for several days now.  We actually did not have a fire yesterday or today.  Amazing!  So what do we do when it’s this warm outside-cut wood, of course!  Here are a few pictures.

This tree had been dead for quite a while.  It was a pretty big tree.  I hope you can see it.  If you look at the right of the picture you can see where we cut it down.  Hubby was very glad for his new larger chain saw.  His old one would never have cut through it.

The wooded area where we were cutting opens up into a beautiful field.

We wheelbarrowed the wood to the truck.  This made it a little easier to load.  Hubby had to split most of the blocks just so we could lift them into the truck.  We worked on this tree for 2 days and still didn’t get it finished.  Hubby’s chain messed up on his saw so we had to quit until he gets it fixed.  We did school in the mornings and then after lunch we would go cut wood.  It was hard work getting the wood around the hill but we had a good time working together.  I told Hubby all this physical exercise was keeping us young (lol).

What is more fun than riding in the truck bed after a hard day of working.  God is good. We are getting ready to leave for Sunday night bible study.  We are studying in Exodus.  Tonight’s menu is sloppy joes, potato chips and dip, cole slaw and dessert (unknown at this time).   I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

Hello everyone!  I thought I would share a few sunrise pictures from yesterday morning.  It was a beautiful sky.

Saturday was very cold here.  We ended up not doing much outside as it was just too cold.  Sunday was cold in the morning but warmed up nicely as the day went on.   A good thing too as it was parade day here in Floyd.  We LOVE our Christmas parade.  It is always so much fun.  Pastor Tom and Mrs. Sally came home with us after church.  We had taco soup and applesauce for lunch.  Then we left for the parade.  Our church did a float this year for the first time.  Julie, Grace and several others walked behind the float and gave out candy.  It was a lot of fun.

In this picture is Pastor Tom, Mrs. Sally, myself, Julie and Grace.  Our float was one of the earlier ones, so everyone got to watch the remainder of the parade.

We are getting back into our routine today after a week  break from school.  We are working on science now.  We have already finished bible and history.   It promises to be a nice day here.  It has warmed up already.   Our temperature is upper 40’s with lots of sunshine.

Well, I better get busy.  Enjoy your day and God bless.

Grapes

The girls and I are starting on our grapes today.  We picked 1/2 bushel this morning.  We plan on making mostly jelly from these.  Tomorrow we will start making juice.  Yesterday I went to our friend Mrs. Faye.  I helped her with her grapes.  She wanted to make jelly and juice.  Last year, they purchased a steam canner and a steam juicer like ours but they were not too confident with using them.  So I went over to help them a little.  It was a fun day.  We had green beans, corn, cucumbers, cole slaw and cornbread for lunch.  YUM!

Not much else going on here.  Just mostly canning.  We plan on picking more tomatoes this evening.  We have been blessed with lots of beautiful tomatoes.  Our temperatures have been cooler at night here.  You can feel fall in the air.  The dogwood trees are starting to turn colors.  Apples will soon be ready.  I love fall.  As I am sitting here typing this post, the sweet smell of grapes fills my home.  God is so good to us.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless.

New Canner and Homemade Deodorant

7832416372_3017788c69_z

This is my new canner.  I stopped at a yard sale a few weeks ago and the lady had this canner for sale.  One of the handles was missing so she sold it to me for $5.00.  Yesterday, I stopped at Farmers Supply here in Floyd to see if they could order  new handles.  I had no idea if they could or not as the canner appears to be old.  Well, they could and they only cost me $8.00.  I then went to the extension office and had them calibrate the guage.  It was off 1 and 1/2 pounds so I thought I probably should get a new guage too.  This cost $l8.00.  Amazing.  These parts will be in by Friday.  So for roughly $30.00 I got a new canner.  This one is much taller than my other ones.  It will hold 1/2 gallon jars which I plan to use for our juice that we can.

Then we went on over to Vicki’s and had a great visit.  We ate lunch together and then Vicki and I made homemade deodorant.

7832417778_26e14a8017_z

We used tea tree oil in the solid deodorant and lavender in the powder.  I really like it.  It smells so fresh and clean.  I am impressed.  I definitely will be making it again.

Today the girls and I are making spaghetti sauce.  This will be our last batch of spaghetti sauce.  I think the rest of the tomatoes will just be used to make tomato juice.  Our tomatoes are doing very well this year.  I think this isthe best ours have done in a long time.

I better go stir the spaghetti sauce as I do not have Mrs. Sally’s good kettle any longer.  I took it back to her Sunday.   Enjoy your day and God bless.

Eggs

We got our first egg from the chicks we bought this spring!!  Isn’t it cute?  I thought I would show you the difference in sizes.  The one on left is the pullet egg, the middle one is our regular size and the one on the right is our extra large.   We have a few white hens that were gave to us last year.  They are the ones who lay the extra large white ones.  Anyway, I guess it doesn’t take a lot to get us excited.

Here’s a picture of Chuck and Hubby working on the car Sunday.  They replaced several things.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if that fixed it or not.   The girls and I have been busy this morning doing laundry and some house cleaning.  Our Pastor brought us a 5 gal. bucket of peaches Sunday night.  We are going to work those up after lunch.

Not much else going on that I can think of.  I hope you all have a great 4th of July and God bless.

Garden

100_9928

I thought I would share with you all a picture of the lower garden.  It is doing pretty good.  The upper garden is having a little more of a difficult time.  We are having trouble keeping the calves out of it.  They seem to find new ways to get out every day and seem to enjoy the corn in the upper garden very much.  Shadow is getting too old to chase them and Jasper is just learning.  He is on the accelerated learning program right now as I want him to learn quickly.  He actually is getting much better.  He “sometimes” listens and obeys commands.  Sometimes he is just so happy that the calves are running from him, he doesn’t care where they are running.  Oh well, that’s life on a farm.

I helped Hubby today at the farmhouse job.  We thought we would start on running the pipes for the plumbing.  However, the walls in the bathroom were in terrible shape, so we started tearing out the sheetrock in there.  We will be running the pipes up and over the ceiling as there is not enough crawl space underneath.   These older homes were built right down on the ground.  The bathroom has a rock type flooring on it and the owners are wanting to keep it.  This suits me just fine as I was not looking forward to trying to crawl under that floor.   The girls worked on history and science while I was helping Hubby.    We had brought our portable grill with us and did  a picnic for lunch.  We had hot dogs, potato chips and oreo’s.  The lunch of champions.  It was fun.  We set up under a huge walnut tree and were entertained by a very friendly squirrel while we ate.  I brought the girls home after lunch.  They did the house chores while I went back to help Hubby.  It was a full day.

I hope you all have a great evening and God bless.

Dollywood

100_9652

Wednesday, we had a GREAT time!!  We went with the Horn’s to Dollywood.  They had bought season tickets and got free one day passes to take a friend.  We were their friends.  Thanks again, guys.  We left Floyd at 7:00 that morning and got back home around midnight.  It was a long day but filled with fun.  Everyone was tired but happy.  Please be in prayer for Vicki and Quentin.  Quentin’s grandfather passed away yesterday morning.

Yesterday was a dry day here in Floyd so I jumped in and started working on the garden.

100_9695

I tillered both gardens and got them ready for planting.  It was a full day.  This morning I started getting the plants in the ground.  So far, I have planted the potatoes, corn, onions, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.  After lunch, beans and tomatoes.  The girls will be helping me with them.  They have been inside doing the housework this morning while I worked outside.

100_9698

These are the seeds the girls and I planted in the greenhouse.  They have done really well.  Maybe all we needed all along was a greenhouse.  They certainly look the best of any seeds we have started before.  Hopefully, they will do good when transferred into the garden.

100_9699

The squash and cucumbers have really grown.  Speaking of growing, look how big the goslings are.

100_9697

They were up in the field watching me while I worked.  Well, I think that’s about it.  I better get back into the garden.  Enjoy your day and God bless.
